gears crunch ish !!! ???

Hi All,
Could anybody explain why my 1983 tasmin 350i crunches the gears when giving the car a bit of welly?
When driving at a sedate pace she shifts fine,checked fluid level and is good,clutch pedal feels fine with what seems like a reasonable freeplay on the pedal!
Have ordered myself Mr Heaths bible as i am a newbie to TVR ownership,therefore in the meantime can anybody shed some light?

When you're giving it some welly you tend to pull higher revs which means the synchros have to handle a higher speed difference. The oil will most likely be hotter and therefore thinner which makes things harder for the synchros. This all makes it easier for you to beat the synchro, leading to that nasty graunching noise.
You may find it helps to slow the gear change slightly at the higher revs to give the synchros time to do their job. I would guess either the synchros are wearing out, or you've got ATF or some other horrible oil in the 'box. If the syncros are wearing then eventually you will need a 'box rebuild (£300-£500 + labour) but you can postpone this by slowing your gear changes down to avoid crunching the gears.

You could first check if your gearlever doesn't move up and down. Several posts exist on this topic. Test is to see how much movement the lever has in vertical direction - one or several inches indicates something is wrong and an easy fix is required.
Basically what happens if this is the case: if you shift and the rubber bushes that keep the gearlever in position are gone, you can hit the propshaft while selecting gears (I had it on 4th) with the gearlever mechanism at the back of the box. New bushes in and my 'crunshing' was gone, abeit other gearbox noises still exist.
