Re-venieering dash boards

I recently read a dashboard restoration page, written by Dave Skelly. After seeing how potentially easy, although time consuming this task is, I have decided to give it a go.

The dash centre section where you have window and heater switches etc - no problem. Piece of aluminium with veneer attached.

HOWEVER, looking at instrument panel and glove box lid, there is NO sign of a aluminium panel the veneer is stuck onto - it looks like the veneer is stuck directly to the wood.... :(

Is this possible or is each and every single veneer on the wedges dash stuck to piece of aluminium with no exception? I don't want to destroy what I have :confused: (not perfect but ok-ish)

Any ideas please? - Thanks in advance.

Yeah mine are the same. You can get a big improvement just by re-varnishing these two pieces.

Cheers Adam. Confirmed - Definatly no metal backing - a magnet sticks to the centre section but not the other 2

I will have a go at re-veneering over the existing veneer - take off the loose stuff first and build up the profile with car body filler to match to match the old veneer which has not chipped off - as long as I get a completly flat and distortion free start, the finish should be OK. It might be an easy way round the problem
