Oh Font of All Knowledge which is the wedge forum I crave your indulgence.

I've acquired a 3.9 litre Range Rover. (I know I know!)
The tickover is sometimes too low (dies after a warm start), sometimes too high (2k).

It seems to be something to do with the stepper motor on the back of the plenum chamber. Giving it a swoosh in some thinners seems to sort it out for a few days, then it does it again. Do I need a replacement, or is there a way of decrudding it properly?

Thinners and a toothbrush should do the trick, remember to clean inside the housing as well as the actual stepper motor. It's possible you have some other problem such as a wiring fault or an iffy road speed sensor? One option if you get fed up with it is simply disconnect the stepper motor once the engine is nice and warm and idling at the right speed, sometimes I think these gadgets are more trouble than they are worth!

Thanks Peter,
I'll keep trying to get to the root of it. My other engines are flapper type efi and carbs, so I don't have a spare to test the theory with. I'll try measuring some volts tomorrow.

I had loose plug on the AFM. They were a tad slack. Very noticeable as there was little resistance in pushing it home. Tightened the plug contacts up and it was all OK. The plug contacts looked a bit fragile so I was very careful tightening them up. I had been cleaning the stepper as well but with no joy. Used ptfe to seal it.
