Windscreen fitting - with trim ('86 car)
Discussion
The chaps at RAC windscreens are really struggling to replace the windscreen, they have the official trim from tvrcarparts but say when it's on the screen then the screen won't go in the hole properly.
The problem as described over the phone is that the screen on its own has rounded - or radiused - corners, and that fits the aperture. However with the trim on there they reckon this squares off the corners and it makes the screen sit too low in the hole.
I've suggested that they trim the trim (!) at the corners but thay weren't too happy with this, they have ordered some more glass in case it's too big.
Anuone else had this problem, what was the solution, etc, etc. Cheers.

Yeah, certainly the top side of the trim - before the old windscreen was removed - had mitred joints that met in the corner. But I'm wondering whether the back side of the 'u' channel has to be cut away to allow the screen to sit closer to the round corners of the fiberglass.
The screen that was put in there without trim had a decidedly scrappy load of sealant in there. Now if a plumber can do a half-decent job around a bath, why can't a windscreen place?

Well I went down to the RAC garage just now to see what their problem was. It looks like the trim makes the windscreen much bigger. One problem is that the trim is too large and would need cutting back. Another problem is that the trim on the inside of the windscreen drastically reduces the contact patch (by half) so that the bond would be weaker. Also the sqared-off top corners don't really fit the rounded aperture and would also need cutting back.
As this engineering seems to beyond them they are going to fit the screen without the trim. Lets just hope they get the mastic looking decent this time around, its their 3rd go, so they should be practiced by now....

The stuff that TvrCarparts supplied was a plastic U channel that fitted onto the edge of the glass before all the bonding takes place.
Having thought about this overnight I reckon that if it was cut in half - making an L cross-section channel - you could push it into the setting adhesive.
I think someone else used a rubber bead (off a Transit? at least we know it's good for 140mph then ;^) stuck over the gap between screen and screen hoop.
