BUGGER!!!!!

Evening All, Everything ready to take engine out so went to hire shop for hoist, "Its out mate til Friday". BUGGER !!.
Have to wait til Friday then, booked 70 sq m of turf as well as to make the most of a valuable day off.
Come 7.00 pm tonight, huge knock on the door, brother-in-law with an engine hoist. Stuck in the corner at work so borrowed it for you. WOW! what can I say. Put it in the garage and had some tea. Came back out, set it up to find it is too small. DOUBLE BUGGER!!
Its a Sealey pro, but the arm is only 3' long. Measured from front bumper to pivot point on engine and I need 5'.

IS this right or do I need an "A" frame. How has everybody else done it?

Sounds about right. You can use it from the side of the car, but it is more difficult.

I had the same trouble so found a scrap length of 80mm box and made an extension jib.
The only drawback is that it reaches further than the wheels do so it has a tendency to tip over
I got round that by having me Julie stand on it...
It's not so bad getting the engine out (especially if mostly-stripped, as mine was) but getting an assembled one back in was a bit hairy.

I ended up buying the 1 tonne folding crane from machine mart / clarkes its extending jib is just long enough to reach, the hire shop one I tried was worst than useless

I had the same problem and had to revert to an A frame, no one to stand on the end of the crane for me

Wow! thanks guys. Will try the extension pce first. If that fails will try the sideways approach. And if that fails, well, I'll have to rip it out with my bare hands.

I hired a crane from machinemart or one of the hire companies which had a long enough arm to take the engine out of a wedge. It wasn't that expensive either iirc and I kept it for the weekend. Is there a shop near you and they deliver?

Hi there Mark,I have just taken an engine out from a works car and I hired an engine hoist from HSS hire shop in bridgend.It cost £24 with delivery for 24 hours.You will have to ring them about the reach.Good luck. Why is the engine coming out? seemed to be o.k on that chasing the dragon run we did the other weekend. simon

Hi Simon, Only running on 7 cylinders. No compresssion on No8. Low compression on all others......UG

If you are going to use an extension on the crane arm make sure you do it with a hire one and not your own, it buggers the seals. Thats why they have a weight limit. sTeVeR
