Warm up regulator help

Hi guys,

I'm new to the forum. I bought my 1986 280i just this summer. Its a blast to drive and i love it, but i am now on to my first major problem. I need a warm up regulator. The bosch number that is on my bad part ends in 052. The problem is that i cant find this number again anywhere. I have an 031 in my possession, and am wondering if this would work. Online i have found 051, 053, 054 etc., but dont know if any of these would match. So basically i am wondering if the one i have will do or if there is another number out there that is comparable to the 052 or where i can find an 052. Any feed back would be greatly appreciated.

Are you in the US? If so, good luck, you will need to find an experienced Bosch dealer, maybe try a VW shop. Otherwise someone here should be able to provide a link to a direct replacement.

yes, i am in the US(New Jersey). I figured that would make it more difficult. Trying a VW dealer sounds like a good idea and i will defiantly take you up on that. But if i am unable to find the exact replacement, would it be detrimental to put a different one in that still looks exactly alike? Because I put the 031 in and it ran wonderfully. All my problems were solved, so should there be anything else that i am looking for? I did find a site... www.specialtauto.com/warm-up-regulators.html... that sells almost all of them, except the 052 which i need and the 031, which i have(Keep in mind i didnt actually buy the 031, a friend of a friend let me try it to see if it would work). So if one of the others would be better, i could buy a different one.

I was able to purchase various small items for my 280i through ebay dealers/breakers who specialise in this engine (also fitted in other cars over here of course). Look under Capri 2.8i or Sierra XR4i, Granada 2.8i.(All Ford). They will mail to you.

I recently replaced my thermotime switch. It was a 2nd hand unit supplied by a company called Capri Gear (01507 343148). Alternatively there is Tickover (0208 298 1995), MWR (01283 711658) or GMS Capri Spares (0191 377 1718) amongst others.

The WUR is just a bimetal strip and a diaphram that moves with the manifold vac. (and increases fuel pressure)
The one in the 280 fully operates in six minutes (according to the book) I would would guess the others have a different op time. They vary according to the time needed for each different engine to reach operating temp.
These are used in all the mid year Porsche 911.
There is a bosche dealer in NJ called "I-Service Imports" in Springdale Rd, Mount Laurel New Jersey.
The guy is basically Porsche but is very helpful.

My local motor factor found one for me I just asked for granada/ capri 2.8i warm up reg. not cheap though about 150 gbp from memory. if your stuck i'll dig out their details im sure they would mail it to the us

Get one which has a different number on it. As long as the engine doesn't overfuel and bog down, or die cold and lean, it's right. It's only in use a few minutes a day, and $300 buys a lot of petrol over there

Roger, why do you think I'm fitting a Weber this winter?

The Bosch system is great if it works but if you dont run the car regularly internal bits in the Ford engine's injection system start to corrode and all hell breaks loose with fueling issues.

Just another reason to drive it everyday. Personally, I dislike webers, Finicky and if it is a DCOE, backfires can cause an engine fire (don't ask how I know).

hmm, except I have other cars to drive everyday, and I dont want to take my P&J through 2miles of nasty country lanes everyday to the office, oh and i can only get insurance for 1500miles a year anyway!

I'm going to us a 38DGAS, pick them up from ebay for £50 or new for £255. The manifolds however are RARHS.
