Unusual exhaust

Just had a hole in my exhaust temporarily repaired (the front and rear of the exhaust were seperated where the exhaust looked like it had sheared apart).
My exhaust has no centre box but only a rear box, I presume this is quite unusual. The SS pipe where the centre box should be has been added/replaced in the recent past as it still looks quite clean.
The car seems a lot quieter now.
