Adjusting door windows on the 280i - how do you do it?
Discussion
Hi, All:
Anyone done a door window adjustment on their 280i? I looked at the factory service and the Steve Heath books, but all I've found is how to adjust the stop. Any other adjustments available, like angle, front or rear glass height, etc.?
Thanks,
- SJ

adam quantrill said The window is held in a channel gripped by a bit of rubber. If you remove it from the channel and put it back in, you can get it to seat differently, probably getting you a 5 to 10 degree adjustment on the angle. If the rubber has perished use a bit of old bicycle inner tube.
Its true but its easier to chat up you local auto glass man and buy a tube of auto glass glue. Make sure you get it in right first time though once it gets hold it would take a brave man to try to take it back out, the last new drivers side glass in the world was sold about 6months ago. If you have to take it out because the lifting mechanism has got bent when you smashed the window and you didn't have the sense

and started again next day when I was calmer. Sorry for the belated reply. Thanks for the welcome and all for your replies/help. Looks like I've just got to dig in and see what I find. The biggest issues are the that windows, both of them, travel too far up, and on the driver's side one top edge is higher than the other.

If it's only the height that's the problem then there is a limit cable attached to the bottom of the rear runner and the window that can be adjusted. This may not cure the problem with one side being higher than the other though. I never managed to cure this by adjusting the window (and not through lack of trying) . In the end I modified the edge of the hood panel, before it was recovered, to suit the window.
My windows went up too high, and had no check wire fitted. All it needed was a trip to a push bike shop to get a short length of bowden cable (brake cable) and a couple of Cable clamps ( cylinder with a screw in it to trap the cable! very high tech!) and then play around to get the right length.
TVR seem to have been pretty basic with their "engineering" of the windows, the SD1 quadrant uses a hole with a bolt in it to act as the stop, rather than using the BL solution of bending a bit of the quadrant over!
My windows don't fit because the door hinge plastic "bearing" at the top of the hinge has worn out, so I have about 10mm!! movement at the trailing edge on the drivers door.I am trying to muster the courage to take the door off as per the bible! It reminds me of the description how to remove the front shackle pin from a TR3 rear spring, where the "approved" way had the comment "Only an optimist will attempt this method" Anyone taken doors off?? No not like "The Italian Job!"
