Steering column plastic bearing - needs replacing - how?

next job is the steering colume bearing (where it goes into the body under the wheel arch)is well gone. Looks like just plastic, heard you can get roller bearings instead? (ie in the bible) But main question is how to get old one out?

Bearing costs about £20. Well worth the job when done, mine felt like a new car. Follow the link from mikeb, its a really good helpfull site. Job takes 1-2 hours

Just got a replacement plastic bearing for my 400 from Ford. It comes from a Mk3 Granada and cost the grand total of £ 1.72 incl VAT. My 400 has an outer roller bearing fitted into a plastic mounting bracket that bolts to the bulkhead, into which the Ford part pushes.

Looking at the invoice I believe the part number is F1638549, but on Ford's diagram of the steering that the parts department uses you require the part marked 19.

cheers guys, ill have a look! I thought that it may have been fixed with the column bolts when i looked at the car but upon closer inspection whilst doing the brakes i noticed that the piece of plastic had done its deed!

the plastic bearing is from a ford sierra .there is a mod kit which us aloy housing with a bearing rase along with the plastic bush.from tvrcarparts.com part no:
ts28h10056 housing
th0055 bearing
+the plasic bush req

I had a real early 280i in a past life, it used a TR7 column and plastic bush. I got some TR7 replacements from Superflex of which I have one left. It is new in the packet and even has a sachet of grease with it. I could post it to you. -Jim
