squealing brakes

hi

was just wondering if there is an anti squeal kit for AP 4 pot (princess) did the conversion last year and they have started to squeal like mad.... The old brakes (granie jobs) had a little plate behind the pad. Im running mintex pads but dont think thats an issue

any info apprciated. cheers james....

Squeal is just a resonance... best solution is to remove pads : clean them and the grove in the middle and put loads of copper easy of the back plate during reassembly.

I agree, and I've used Mintex before with no problems, but if that doesn't work then you need some anti-squeal shims. However getting them might be tricky?

They are usually thin bits of stainless steel. I reckon you could easily make some up out of old aly beer cans, just cut to the size of the back of the pad backing, with holes for the retaining pins, and stick in there between the pads and the pistons.

Ive just put Mintex pads on my 400 and when they warm up they have started to squeal like pig!

The only way i know is the copper grease theory as already mentioned...i hate doing pads on cars! such an utterlly boring job!

im sure i did grease them well so i think the beer can idea could be a winner ill come back to you with some results....

hopefully will give it a go on sat if i get round to it...

When I bought some Mintex pads they came with the stick on pads that you just cut to size. I think many people don't bother with them but if you are having problems may be worth giving them a try.
I also found a problem with the pad retaining spring and pin setup (I am not sure there is a 'correct' one for the Princess Caliper with twin spacer setup). I found mine wasn't pushing the pad down enough and the edge was catching on the disk. The problem started as a squeal but got worse with a slight chatter as the pads were moving around. ended up trimming some off the springs.
