Hello all,

I've seen a possible wedge for sale and just liked to ask you your ideas on a valuation....

1986 Series 2 in silver with red interior, 80,000 miles. In very good condition all round but has been sitting in a garage for the last couple of years (so will need an MOT). Valley gasket is also leaking so will need sorting, outriggers seem ok.

Bearing in mind the fault and no MOT and the cost of a transporter to get it home. What would you say it's worth?

Cheers!

If the valley gasket is "leaking" due to over pressure from combustion gases, budget for replacement head gaskets and/or new rings, worst case total engine rebuild. The one I took a risk on ( full service history 56k miles ) ended up costing £**** for a replacement block/pistons/crank + labour. Do a compression check BEFORE you buy!

Valley gasket leak -not uncommon on rv8 - as long as its not pushing oil out seriously - mot is probably the bigger worry as ther could be lots of things underneath needing attention.

Looks like less than 3.5K..

My advise would be to wait until you have seem some others .. maybe like the others suggested here.

Until you have seen a good one - you don't really know what they should look like.

If it has no MOT then it will be for sale for quite a while - so no rush.

Cheers guys,

Didn't realise that a leaking valley gasket could indicate such a big problem.

Is there any simple way of checking that the head gasket, etc. is on it's way out?

Anyway I'm going to have a look next Saturday so I'll let you guys know what I think.

As sadbloke says the compression test will give you a clue. All cylinders should be within a few PSI of each other. If the gasget has gone at leas one of them will most likely be down on pressure. You can get a compression tested for ~£30 & take a fully charged spare battery with you as it will take a lot of cranking to test all 8 pots.

Don't do it - too much to risk.
This Wedge may only be worth £2500 - £3000 and potentially need £000s spending on it.
Instead, before the summer kicks in, pay £3500 and get a well looked after wedge that you know needs little doing on it.

And how do you 'know'? I thought my 390SE was fine, I didn't 'know' it would need a £1000 engine rebuild 6000 miles later.
Unless some of us bite the bullet and spend (or invest, if you will) our time and money, more an more of these cars will end up (a) being trashed by monkeys and (b) scrapped. Just because things are rusty or tired isn't reason enough to walk away. Call it Dibnah syndrome, but if it wasn't for dedicated individuals (or nutters, if you prefer ) there would be no steam trains left, no motor museums...

Well said....I seem to have an unerring ability to do this naturally anyway.

The guy wants £2800 for the car and I've told him that I wouldn't be willing to pay that much. I don't mind spending a few hundred quid getting it ready for summer, but you're right. I could pick up an MOT'd running wedge for 3k-3.5k so if there are any other problems with the car I could easily end up spending this amount (plus maybe more). Then again I could spend a few hundred and have a 'sorted' wedge for summer. mmm! decisions, decisions......

Or you could buy a 'sorted one' for 3-5K.....and still have to shell out!
IMHO unless you live with a car you never know whats wrong with it. An MOT is just a postponement of the opening of the wallet

I would say walk away unless he made you an offer you cannot refuse.. but even then I'd rather have a running car I could enjoy rather that a car sat on the drive that had known problems that must be fixed before I could use it !

Does anyone know anything about the red one (for £3500) in the classifieds?

Bit hairy chest wig though. He's got it for sale on ebay and the wheels are red too! Bit overkill but sounds like a nice one from the description.

Might have a look as not too far from me.

Didn't notice that! If you look a bit closer at the rear bumper it doesn't look very well painted!

My philosophy entirely not being well versed in the spanner dept like Wedgie.

I can drive it, I can clean it but I can't be hacked to fix it up

It takes all sorts!
