Strange number stamped on me plenum

My engine is NCK039. So why is the plenum stamped AR28E ? is this one of Andy Rouse's leftovers?

If its just above the throttle pot, mine has a number code beginning BL

OK, OK, sensible reply time...

I have four plenums (plena?) here: one is marked AT17L (the one originally on the 390); one is BF27H and the other two seem to be unmarked... though one is painted so if the stamp marks were light enough maybe they wouldn't show. I only had the light from the one candle, normally used to illuminate the master bedroom here at Wedg1e Villas, so I may just have missed it

Probably nothing, unless you worked in the foundry where they were cast.
Almost any casting bears not only whatever marks the end customer requests, but also various production data such as month, casting machine operator, batch number, QA inspector etc etc.
On a pre-production casting there can be even more: die number etc.
Have a look on engine parts or alloy wheels and you might see WYF (West Yorkshire Foundries), AE (Associated Engines I think), AWI (Alloy Wheels International), MCL or MCW (Metal Castings Ltd.) and so on.
A circle divided into 12 segments (like a Trivial Pursuit wedge holder ), with a number like 87 in the middle and a dot or dots in the segments is telling you which month of the year (1987 in this case) the part was made.

The marks on the Rover plenum are probably batch number...

Edited to add: Rover V8 blocks were cast at West Yorkshire Foundries in Leeds so bear WYF; rocker covers were last made at MCL in Wolverhampton. Both were customers of mine: I used to maintain the x-ray machines they used to check for casting defects... alas both plants now gone, partly aided by the demise of Rover...

Interesting tale Wedg1e. Must have been an interesting job too. I remember seeing similar date coding on the inside of mobile phones - thus showing date of manufacture, and some plastic trays I use for filing and storage.

Will Mitchell Cotts be rejuvenating the foundries for the continued production of the Rover V8 - or are they having the castings done elsewhere?

That was the 75mm inlet plenium for the SEAC - it's just fitted into the std plenly - you can see the join if you look carefully.

You can make out a number stamped just above the throttle body too... that's what the original post was about....

Yep I got the NCK mark there as well - but that is just a collar attatched to the plenum.
