It's fallen off again

Got back from the Woodman without a hitch. Ran perfectly. Then stopped for petrol and it wouldn't start (again). Will I ever get the starter motor to work? And then I noticed the speedo as well as the rev counter nows reads 0 all the time.
Now before I crawl underneath the car again (it's cold and dark) I'm guessing it's perfectly easy to reconnect a dangling cable back onto the gearbox? Any tips to keep it there this time?
