Well, finially getting round to fitting the oil cooler but I can't see where I would mount it. Various writeups have said behind the radiator. I have had a look and can't work out how I would mount it.
Does anyone have any piccies please?

Can't advise on brackets etc, but behind the radiator (i.e. downstream from the point of view of the air stream) is the best place. If you have a choice, position it nearer the rad water outlet rather than the inlet.

I positioned mine behind the rad and just behind the fan.

Originally when I bought the car the cooler was mounted right up in front of the rad, just where stones would puncture it. In addition to this there was no thermostat - overcooling the oil probably caused premature failure of the distributor gear (that also drives the oil pump).

So I resited and also fitted a thermostat and a temp gauge, at the same time I resited the oil filter to the LH front and rerouted the top hose so the bonnet didn't shave bits off every time it was opened. These last two mods can't be done if you have a wussy power steering fitted.

Car is a V8 - different rules probably apply to the V6 cars.

Looks like you've got a 350 - none had or needed a cooler as standard, although if yours is tweaked, it may then need one. All of the 400 / 450 models that I've seen have the cooler mounted on the o/s in front of the rad., the brackets top and bottom bolting into tappings in the rad. frame.

My 390 has its cooler in front of the rad... though I never considered stones puncturing it!

Do I recall that the early 390's didn't have a wire mesh across the intake, just some body colour fibreglass strips?

Behind the rad is preferable, because the oil runs (should run) quite a bit hotter than the water under load.

They certainly had some slats but I don't know whether there was mesh behind them. I can't decide whether I like them or not but I've never seen anyone selling some so I could try them...
Mine's not an early car, it's an 87... but apparently not a S1 and not a S2 either!
