As I'm off to Leeds in the morning for this week any thoughts on the following for me to fiddle with at weekend ?

Car won't start !!

Spark at the dissy / plugs - now

Can hear the fuel pump at rear of car

Engine turns but won't catch

No immobiliser - as that was going to go on at weekend, but needed to move the car first

At first there was no spark so did my normal trick of wiggling the connector to the amplifier on the dissy as this normally then clicks (with ignition on) and then she fires.
Had a rather louder click this time, but it is now sparking. Have I damaged the LT side of ignition and how do I test for this ?

So instead of alarm I fixed the bib spoiler ready for the next petrol station battle

Injectors not firing? pull a plug to see if wet?

Check the connection from the ignition amp to the ECU... assuming the 400SE does it that way. The wiring on mine was fairly parlous before I rewired it, could easily have been a breakdown waiting to happen.

On the ignition amp there are 3 wires 2 on 1 connecter, 1 on the other and nothing on the middle connector,

I know one of the wires goes to the afm area via a posh bullet connector.

Where do the other 2 go too ? 1 to coil ? 1 to ecu ?

Probably the one with 2 wires goes to afm & ecu hence why now sparking but not operating injectors ?
and single wire to coil ?

From memory they all could be white as well which does not help

I think one's white and one white/black... w/b goes to ecu from memory. It's often the bullet connector near the AFM that corrodes and shags the trigger signal.

That sounds about right with the connector as it's all very brittle and having removed and reattached recently is probably the cause of non starting.

Must sleep now as 3 hour drive to Leeds not far away

Just sussed mine out. Mine presented with similar symptoms....after headscratching and all sorts of fiddling about it turns out it was a connector under the dash.

It was a white plastic multiplug that is to the right of the steering column. Lots of wiggling and prodding an electrical tester into the fuse hole on the dash found it.

So, a dose of solder and stuff it's sorted. I reckon its the same problem for you.
I can take a picture if you like.

Na I recon the connector by the afm as Wedgie suggests as that was playing up , plus probably a relay / fuse now

Rev as for the ms yep its going in soon,(well hopefully before BBWF) but might also whip of the old manifold and put the later hotwire one on with different injectors, fuel rail, idle valve etc and no resistor pack, seeing as that is also lying around in the shed somewhere.(just need to find the wiring loom amongst my junk)

Then put the whole of the Flapper inj system on the WSV and bin the carbs

Problem is they keep sending me up north and I can't fiddle in the evenings now. Leeds at mo then Huddersfield next week, followed by Manchester, Teeside, Newcastle and then Scotland somewhere !! Want to go somewhere local like Coventry or Northampton where I can get back every evening to Reading.

Should start a Wedge bits delivery system dropping / picking bits up as required

Now what can I buy with these motorway miles vouchers

Ok now on car and still no joy

It sort of fired first thing and ran for about 30 secs and then died

So far I know I have spark at the plugs

I also know the injectors are opening and spraying fuel, (well the extra fuel rail with injectors is working on cranking)

I've swapped all 3 relays just in case

It seems to want to fire but just not catch.

I still think maybe lt side of ignition, or feed to ecu, or ecu (brother in law has my spare at mo )

Next idea - other than m/s

Sounds more like your fuel pump is shot Paul. For the 30 seconds it ran, was it running normal?

Fuel is coming out at a good rate through the test injector set up, and certainly building up a nice high presure. Plus if yo disconnect inlet and crank engine over it shots out quite fast

I wonder now if my spark is not strong enough with maybe a blown amplifier ? What does it do as not sure I've got a spare one, and the WSV is different I think, plus don't want to disable as it is being used to provide almost a constant jump to the wedge

Oh just had another look at WSV and it has an amp on side of dissy. Can you get them of without removing dissy ?

Yup. Couple of screws.

Coolant temperature sensor? Quick test: Short the sensor leads to make ECU think hot engine, and see if it continues to run.

Will try that tomorrow now.

Can't get to the amp as power steering in way on both vehicles, so probably have to remove dissy, unless anyone knows what size spanner fits the screws ? 6 or 7 mm ?
Also looks like a problem with dissy cap, but that is probably me playing with it

Well it appears to be the amplifier, as tried everything else now. Looking at the RR guide on there ignition tests it is showing the amplifier as failed.

Can't be bothered to take of WSV as even harder to get at than the wedge ( remove p/s pump)

Will now try and get replacement which is apparently hard to get hold of as Lucas no long around ?

Oh well carry on and try and bleed the WSV brakes again to get some pressure

ACT do them but price on application! might be an idea to use some longer leads and locate it elsewhere?
