Hi,
Am I ok with a Quinton Hazell cheaper version, or do I need to spend double and get Lucas (whichI think was originally on that engine? Also, has anyone changed one, how difficult is it ?

I've never used a QH version, so don't know how their reliability is, but if they really are half the price, might be worth a punt. Last Lucas one I bought was c. £130 IIRC. Worth taking the old one out first, especially if you're getting it from a motor factor, for comparison. As for removal, they're held in by two (usually) allen-headed bolts, which can be very tight. Worth using a ratchet with an allen bit to shift them. Other than that, and disconnecting the elctrical connections, straightforward. Disconnect the battery first though, as there is a good chance of shorting something out down there. And finally, definitely worth rigging up a heat shield, as the O/S manifold is very close to starter, and will eventually fry it.

Thanks, but on previous threads, there has been conflicting views on wrapping starter or exhaust manifold as some say that keeps heat in even more, but my solenoid was sticking last year when warm and wouldn't start, so I'm hoping new starter will help. ta for the advice.

Be very careful here. There are many different starter motors for the RV8 and most of them won't fit. To make matters worse the part number for the one that does fit is shared with others that don't fit, lol. IIRC the Bosch ones fitted to Griffs are the best. Also inspect your motor - what's wrong with it? If possible try to refurb your old motor - you know that it will fit.

What I've done is fabricate an ally shield that sits directly below the starter, protecting it from rising heat, and wrapped the section of manifold nearest it with a mtal mesh/heat resistant cloth held with a couple of worm drive clips - not the usual Thermotec type exhaust wrap.

Well I asked them all to quote me for Rover SD1 3.5 V8 injection engine - surely that is the correct one ?? The engine is exactly the same as that isnt it? Sorry, is it Rover SDI or 1?

IIRC I was told it's a LR fit (maybe as well as Rover).

OK easy bit first. The engine is from the Rover Vitesse SD1 (for special developments number one.) The next problem is your use of the definite article; sadly there is not one engine and one starter motor. To put this in context Rover/Land Rover made over 2,500 versions of the Rover V8 and that's before people like TVR started to modify them. Comments like "the old Rover V8" are not helpful. If you do a long and boring search you'll find that there are a lot of people who have exchanged/lost/thrown away theier original motor and have had very great difficulty in finding a replacement. Is it really the case that your motor cannot be refurbished?

Seven may well be correct. Note a LR fit and not the LR fit.
I'm not surprised that you're confused - everyone think's it's simple because it's a Rover block but on the 350 it's very tight down there with the chassis and exhaust manifold. Don't let go of your old motor until your new motor is fitted and working and the car is running.

Good luck, Jonathan

JR's pretty much covered it - lots of variations, hence why I suggested taking the old one out for comparison, or, as JR suggested, possible rebuild. You might even find it just needs a clean up and a new brush set, much cheaper than buying a new one. The alternative would be to talk to Richard Thorpe (RT Racing) or TVRcarparts for prices/variations etc., although most units would be exchange, meaning you've got the aggro. of getting it to them. The last one I got was from a LSUK outlet www.lsuk.co.uk/. Maybe worth a look if theres one near you.

Thank you no. 7 & JR. I just want to get a replacement and not mess about with someone taking it off, then having to try & match it. Want to get part that fits in first place!!! If they are all so different, if I take it into car parts place, they won't necessarily recognise it will they? I didn't think TVR modified the engine. Oh dear. Anyway, I thought you said they were only held by few bolts. Isn't it the case that more than one might fit ???

TVR modified lots on the engine from the Al Melling (of AJP6&8 fame) designs of over 60 different camshafts to the ecu but that's veering off topic. Yes it is the case that more than one will fit but there are a lot more that won't fit than will. Why not try 7's link? Remember that the same part number is used for both motors that will and won't fit. Alternatively (as was suggested earlier - 7 again?) why not try RT? At least he knows the cars well and you won't have to spend time explaining any of this to him. Then there's Jim and Gareth at Harrogate Horseless Carriages and Tony at Hexham HC. Or TVR car parts.

I think the problem is that they all have the same bolt holes but some have the solenoid on the side and some have it below. But the main problem is the length - the wrong ones are too long and foul the manifolds. TVRCarparts i think would easily compare one to yours.

I am having a really s***e time with my starter. It is mega tight with my new manifolds. Just need the motor to be much smaller.
