Mine stows vertically in the boot (350i) but only with the spare wheel removed.
I store mine ion the boot and don't bother with the spare, carry a couple of cans of tyre weld and an AA card
I found it used to scuff, even in the bag when laid across the spare wheel. The underside of the boot is quite rough.
Well that's ok then because I don't have a spare. Just a can of tire weld in the boot too! Whilst on the subject of the boot does anyone have problems with the boot catch? My boot refuses to 'catch' when closing (soft or hard). I've noticed that the metal bar the sits into the catch is worn on one side.

On my old 350i (i hate saying that) the only way it would latch was to push down with the flat of my hand in the centre of the boot (directly over the catch.

Ive just sorted my boot catch out as it used to do the same thing. I had to remove my boot liner and release the tension from the solonoid each time before the boot lid would stay shut. You may want to try that actually. Just pull the solonoid out by hand and then try to close the boot. If it now closes, then the cause is either a weak spring on the latch or a sticky solonoid. I cured the problem by adding an additional spring to the catch to give it more grunt when closing. Works perfectly now. I also have a lot of wear on the metal bar so I dont think this is necessarily the cause.
The boot needed a real slam to latch on ours, I found that there was a bit of adjustment available on the locking bar. Just loosen the screws and move the bar up a little, not too much or the boot lid can rattle about though.
Tire weld and no spare too - doubles the size of the boot.

with the wheel out i could. With the SEAC the boot is a lot deeper and it can be be stowed either way with no need to remove the wheel.
