Rather embarassingly, the car wouldn't let me get in from the outside, fortunately the roof was off so I could reach in.

Does any one know the part numbers for the little plastic bits that connect all the rods for the door mechanism, they seem to have gone brittle and I want to change all of them.

Also I the alarm and central locking ( no key fob ever came with the car), the motors are in the doors but the alarm is just loose in the battery bay with some really dodgy wires hanging loose. ANy ideas on who to talk to and prices to have a new alarm fitted that will get the C/L motors working too.

Finally, and thanks for reading this far, the electric mirrors. They clonk when I try to operate them but there is only a fraction of movement. Any ideas???

My 400 was MK2 Escort, i think yours are the same, the spotty kid behind the Ford counter will look blank! The motors are after market, but pretty universal, any alarm dealer can sell you these, the boot motor is also the same.

Gears stripped in the mirror motor i reckon.

Thanks Brummie, I'll be off to ford tomorrow ( my part guy is a knuckle dragger with no concept of communication let alone customer service!), I take it there is no point mentioning what car it is for; just ask for Mark 2 Escort!

Maplin do a 4 door central locking kit for £22 (just use the 2 5 wire motors and discard the 2 2 wire ones), then you need another couple of quid for 5 pole change over relay.

Any alarm with a switched negative output should be able to operate this kit.

I've just fitted it all to my 350i, the lock in the drivers door was broke , and this seemed like a cost effective upgrade.

The only problem was bending the lock button rods slightly, to match the actuator rods from the CL motors, took a couple of attempts , but now it works great.

Repleaced my motors with a set from a Ford Puma, Good quality just throw the bits away that you dont use £30

Those plastic clips are rubbish, really. If one goes on mine I cut up a little bit of aly with some aviation snips and drill a hole in it, so it looks a bit like a cross with a square bit on the end of one 'arm'. Then I fit it over the wire end and bend the free arms round the back of it. Works a treat - and much more durable than before.
