Got list of faults back from TVR centre!!
Discussion
Ok, I knew it would need a few things doing. They're getting back with a price tommorow AM but here goes,
1. Offside discs and pads down to metal and caliper appears to be seized
2. Centre/down pipe (and back box I think they said too) will need replacing
3. Pipe between the two fuel tanks is corroded and will need replacement
4. Piece of chassis that holds rear diff in place is corroded.
They still haven't test driven the car so haven't experienced the excessive bump steer yet so who knows what that will be...............
To be honest I don't think it's that bad (it certainly could have been a lot worse!)
So what do you guys think? Will this be break the bank expensive?

Good news bad news:
1. Probably not siezed, just clean off the rust from the caliper + new pads.
2. Get a stainless one fitted - fit and forget!
3. I thought that was a rubber pipe?
4. Sounds bad, you might be able to get at it after the diff is removed to weld in extra metal but worst case is body off. Could be expensive!

Ok, I've spoken to them again and the chassis has apparantly got a good few years in it yet so not as bad as they first thought.
I have been quoted £450 to free up the caliper and replace disc and pad (will be more if the caliper needs replacing). Bearing in mind this is one of the rear inboard brakes does this price seem excessive?

They have recommended getting it waxoiled but you're right I'd take it to a 'normal' garage for that. Probably wait till after summer to get it done.
It's funny how last night they told me that my exhaust and rear diff are about to fall out/off and now today the exhaust only has a small hole in it and the rear diff will be ok!

Might be worth doing a search as there have been other threads on rear brakes. "Sometimes" the pads can get stuck in the caliper with the accumulation of road dirt, pad material etc. and not retract properly. Don't know how handy you are with the spanners, but it would be worth removing the pads, inserting something thinner between the disc and caliper to prevent the pistons popping out, and have someone apply the brakes to see if the pistons move. If they do, and given that you need new pads anyway, give everything a good clean with brake cleaner, and fit new pads, ensuring that they are free to move within the caliper. If the calipers need to come out, its worth buying new/recon as they're only c. £65 each. Best to replace the discs at the same time, fairly cheap. I hope they're not suggesting replacing just one disc
From memory, they're c. £20-£30 each. removing the calipers/discs is time consuming (for me anyway). I would think 4 hours for a pro to replace BOTH discs and calipers, and bleed would be about right. TBH, their labour rate is probably £70+ p.h., and that job would not be difficult for any competent mechanic. Indy's should be able to do the job significantly cheaper if you can't yourself. 7.
Dropped mine off this morning for a four wheel laser alignment.
Noticed 2 other wedges: a red 350SE, and a green 350i that had a small bit of body damage on the n/s (near the door). Either your's borat?
Folks there is a really nice maroon '90 450SE for sale too. B5 TVR (I think). Very clean, only 37,000 miles. Up for £13995 though.
Was it anybodys on here?

I'd agree with this lot - if the extimate seems excellive (and I think it will be) you might want to take it to either Otfords or Perry at the V8 Centre : both are reasonably priced and kinda in the area.
Yep, the green one is mine. I got a quote of £250 to repair the scratch and respray the rear valance. Will have to wait a couple of months to get that done now!
They charge £45 an hour labour for the older stuff which I think is quite reasonable (and almost half their normal charge).
The 450SE that they have for sale I think is a for a customer. One of the guys told me yesterday that one of their customers (owns a Tuscan and a Sagaris) has wanted a 450SE since he was a boy. He found one and purchased it and then took it down to them and told them he hated it! I presume that this must be the car and they are selling it on behalf of him..........

So, lets assume the new discs cost £70 inc.- this means that £380 of their quote is for labour, which, assuming the £45 is plus vat, gives a gross labour rate of £52.88 and 7 hours of labour. I think this is excessive, and it's based on assumptions favourable to them. Least favourable case results in 8.5 hours labour. I just can't see either being right. I think a phone call to an Indy to get a quote for the hours involved might be reveal something interesting. All IMHO of course.

Well I'd like to get everything done on the car and haven't really got the time to start looking around elsewhere. I know that the work done there will be done properly and I don't think the quote for the work is that expensive either. I know if I took our other car (a Focus) to a main dealer it would probably cost a lot more for the same job! In the future when I have enough space I'd like to do jobs like this myself, but until then I'd like to make sure that I have peace of mind that my brakes will work when I put my foot on the pedal!
It's obviously your perogative to have your car repaired wherever you choose. I tried to answer your original "is this quote expensive" question based on my own experience of these jobs. You seem to have made your mind up that it's not expensive. As I said, up to you, but, as with most things, the market will take whatever people are prepared to pay. If I were cynical, I might say that a garage may reduce it's headline labour rate to attract business, but increase the hours taken for a job to offset this.
BTW, just out of interest, was their quote based on changing one or both discs?

Aye, you can't win with costs on these things. For example I've charged £250 to replace both sill tubes and plates on a Wedge; that's two long days' work, and that included materials (inc. MIG gas, wire, steel, paint, bolts etc.).
However no doubt some people would think that I must be bodging it as the cost seems cheap compared to the £750 that a 'specialist' would have off you...
I work on the principal that if I spend a day on someone's car, I've taken a day off work to do it, and I want that day's pay replacing. £100 a day as a private individual seems fair enough to me.
As for servicing some brakes, £50 an hour for that long is having a larf...

I can't think of a more sensible place to take a Wedge for a proper job. TVR Centre is one of the few dealers that has personnel who sold and worked on Wedges 'in period'. Sure, you could find a bloke to do work on it for less but there is no doubt in my mind that at Barnet you can be CERTAIN the call will be made right.
Re: Bump steer, ask for Giles to drive it if possible. He knows how to set TVRs up.
I'm pretty certain it's both discs and pads for that price.
I've always thought that if a well established garage does start overcharging then word would get out pretty quickly and they wouldn't stay in business very long, especially with TVRs as it's a pretty close community of owners in comparism to other manufacturers.
