Well it failed the MOT yesterday (great disgust). The main problem is a leak from the diff onto the inside of a brake. So will having to remove the diff to cure this problem. So I have decided that a complete overhaul of the rear is needed including recon of diff (if seal has gone the bearing probably has as well so may as well go all the way). Trouble is I need to find a firm to recon the diff. Has any one had experience of companies in the Bucks / Hertfordshire area.

PS need a quick turn round the bus is no fun

Phil,
If I remember correctly, the rear dif is a standard Jaguar part (XJ6 or XJS?).
You might be able to pick up a new (recon) diff at a Jag breakers for simular money as having yours reconditioned?
Just a thought...

Edited to say after checking, if you quote "4HU" to a jaguar parts person, this is the type of diff you are after.

I used www.ward-engineering.co.uk for supply of various parts to recon my diff, though did the spannering myself. They were helpful and humoured me not having a clue what all the bits I wanted were called

Think they're round the other side of the M25 to you so don't know if any good.......

Although I can't speak from personal experience, these guys do seem to have a good reputation, and they're in Herts. www.gearboxman.co.uk/contact.html

To be honest I'd just change the seal in situ, top the oil up and carry on, unless its run the unit dry of oil (unlikely).
These things are pretty tough and unless its grumbling away or causing a lot of vibration its probably fine.

changing the seal will be fiddly though, brakes, driveshaft have to come off etc

If its not too bad, why not change the oil and add an additive that swells the seals.

I used these guys a couple of years ago to refurb the T5 gearbox and diff. Did a great job but not sure you are going to get a quick turn around though, as they are very busy. Worth checking the breather isn't blocked before you go to the trouble of a refurb.

Sadly the leak was no only from one seal but all and the rotating bits and the rear cover. So decided to get it looked at as the only time I have seen this before was when a diff had been run dry and over heated then refilled.

Panic over diff not been run dry just poor rebuild in the past all parts OK but needed seals all round and re pretensioning on the pinion. Rapid turn round by Southern Axles in Watford and returned in only 3 days as good as new. Many may consider it expensive at £180 but as this includes all seals gaskets etc and labour to strip and check the diff not a bad price.

Now only waiting for the 30 ton press I ordered to change the bushes UJ's etc and I can start assembling it again.

My offside rear tyre is wearing much quicker than my N/S (The damn genie keeps trying to escape)- can this be cured with a LSD? and if so, where do I get one, what is it called, and how much will it likely cost?

I presume you've checked all the obvious stuff like pressures, dampers and geometries?

Ah, good point. Maybe I should put those rear tie rods back on!

We are all prone to jumping to the expensive conclusion first. I don't know why but the cheap and simple options just aren't so appealing
