I have a 1983 TVR Tasmin which I cannot get to stop flooding. I replaced the fuel pump with a Mercedes unit which looks exactly the same as the original but I wonder if the fuel pressure is too high. Can someone tell me what the fuel pressure is supposed to be? Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
I forget the actual system pressure but it's set at the factory using shims to preload a sprung plunger in the fuel metering unit attached to the air cleaner. I guess it'd be possible for the spring to weaken and reduce the pressure but I don't know how it could increase, unless perhaps the fuel return from the metering unit to the tank is blocked.
Another possibility is that the metering piston is stuck in a raised position so the metering unit thinks there's more air going through than there really is, so adds fuel accordingly.
Alternatively, the stainless steel diaphragm that separates the upper and lower chambers of the metering unit (thus keeping high and low pressures apart) could have corroded through.
Finally, the warm-up regulator can cause all sorts of problems if it fails stuck open/closed...
