sticky brakes.....

Right...

Well, tonight was an interesting one as during a late night blast tonight with my mate in his elise, i smelt something burny/hot which of course is never a good thing!

Pulled over ASAP and left all brakes off on the flat and there was smoke bellowing out of the arches as the rear brake/brakes had overheated...thing is, they did this on a straight road and not under loony braking, and it would be front first anyhow!

Basically, any ideas? Ive put new pads on about 4 months ago (WHAT A PAIN) and dont want to go anywhere near new caliper fitment-way out my depth...

Is this the only fix?

Whats the damage if i do decide to have them done with newys???

Possibly the smoke was the grease burning off the UJ's with the heat from the binding brakes?

Better grease them up again just in case.

Did you give the calipers a good scrub before fitting the pads? mine were so full of crud and dust and shite that mine started to bind and I had the whole smoke thing....which is nice.

Gave them a good clean before fitting the new pads.

well, i did as much as i could really but they are such a pain in the f&c$ing ass to do, i cant be totally sure!

I have a funny feeling its only one of the pots sticking as it gave me a little grief going back in when i changed the pads....

I cant feel the brakes sticking, i can even roll the car (when im out of it!)

Matt - Have a look at the pads, if they have a white 'dust' around the visible edge between the metal backing plate and the disc then it usually means that they have stuck on!

Not sure about the price of calipers, but its a lot easier job if you can get under the car ie using a ramp or a pit.

Hi Matt, Jack car up and check for sticking brakes, mine was same last year and found nearside rear caliper pistons sticking in caliper body, removed, stripped, cleaned and replaced with new seals and now works perfectly fine. Seals are from XJS Jag. Have part no. at home if that helps.
May be worth checking flexi hose first. dave

Is it definitely the rears that are seizing?

Is it definitely both sides?

Take it to your local MOT station and ask them nicely ot put it on the brake tester for you. It should show up which if any is sticking. Even if it costs you a tenner it'll be worth it for the ease of diagnosis.

As others have said it could just be grease burning off from that area, I had that after my first session at Spa and thought the car was on fire, once it cooled it was fine and didn't smoke again.
