Coolant fan fuse blowing?

It keeps blowing, and ideas? Its a 350i, a 20amp fuse as specified for a car without air con.... can't figure it out!

Is there anything else on the same circuit? Either original or tacked on.
Have you got a decent DVM with a high current scale? If so you could run the fan independently and see what it takes. Alternatively (for a test)you could string some wires direct from the battery through a 20Amp fuse to the fan and see if that pops.

Also, fan spinning free?

I thought my original fan was by turning the blades although sounded a tad rough. Took the blades off and I could not turn the spindle by hand. Fuse didn't blow though, just melted.

Its a long shot, but I had a similar problem due to a leaking top hose, water then running across the GRP cross memeber above the rad, and then dripping through a hole where a cable tie was holding the wiring loom straight onto an electrical connector to the fan!

You would have thought TVR would have designed against it!?

Try some wd40 on the fan motor - it sounds like it's had its day and may need replacing..

Are you sure 20 Amp is the correct spec? seem to remember it as 30 Amp. Anyway mine was doing the same and also found the fuse holder was melting? eventually i changed it altogether for an RCB. If it trips just flick the switch.

Just try turning the fan round by hand - if it's really stiff then the bearings are bad / rusted : replace the part before it leaves you stranded on the side of the road..

If it turns easily - then look else where for the fault.

A while bad - I suspected that one of my fans was not cutting in - so I just ran a new + and - wire to them.. (you need to didconnect connector from the loom to do this..

Thanks everyone. The bearings in the fan do sound a bit rough so I will have a look tomorrow, I also have a pI$$ing water leak out of the swan neck cap, so will sort that too, at least before it does anymore damage! If all else fails I will rewire the fan, I could do with fitting a remote switch anyway!

We had the same last year with Gandalfs at Le Mans..

kept blowing fuses - fan stiff, bad bearings, wd40 , blowing bigger fuses, melted fan motor..

He drove home at 3am to blighty - as it was cooler.
