Yes, join the dark side and get a FHC.
Don't expect it to leak any less than a convertable though.

Most are Ford 2.8i Capri/Granada powered (280's), the rest RV8, usually 350's, although I don't know what the ratio is, anyone got any ideas? I believe there are some 3.9 powered ones, I have my eye on a J-plate one near me that just sits on the guys drive and never moves, I keep going past hoping someone will be in the garden, I guess I'll just have to knock on the door and ask. I used my old 280 2+2 for part of last Winter and it coped ok, but much better to have a more modern car of the same value and not have to worry about things going wrong in the middle of Winter, when you really don't want to be working on the car. All IMHO of course.

i wasn't really thinking about the practicality or the value
i drove my cobra all of last winter despite having a modern car i could use
this 390 se seems a bit good to use in the winter - cos there aren't loads of them about and the chassis is so good it would be a pity to wreck it with a winters worth of salt
i just thought that a fhc would get used more than a 2 seater
so i think i'll put the 390 up for sale
any one got a decent hard top car they want to part ex against it ?

There is a 390 FHC on the TVRCC web site, a one off.
For the money the red 350FHC in the link above looks like a good buy.

So you do love Wedges ??

yep that looks like exactly the sort of thing
i'll put mine up for sale
the one thing i have to say about wedges - well the only one i've driven actually
is that it drives quite well
most of the tvrs i've tried are rock hard , high performance cars
this 390 seems quite easy and comfortable to drive
which is unusual for this kind of car
or is it just me ?

IIRC there were 118 280iFHC 2 seaters made
28 280i 2+2's
47 350i FHC 2seaters
7 350i 2+2's
and apparently just the one 390 FHC 2 seater.

Not sure how many are left though.

My g/f used to use our 350iFHC every day of the year till the dog came along and she went for a modern hatchback

The biggest problem with them (and in my experience any FH GRP car) is the way the windscreen mists up so easily, usually resulting in driving with the windows cracked open a bit.

Nick

Hi there

Here in Germany there´s a 2,8 turbo Fhc for sale on autoscout.
As it is even a lhd car i´m quite tempted to start a little TVR collection.
Does anybody know if this is a factory original or if it has to be a aftermarket conversion?

Cheers jens

Yes, the FHC does have a broblem with windscreen demisting. I redesigned the heater box in my FHC, and it works great now, albeit a tad noisy on full fan. Also the rear demisters seldom work, which is a PITA.

The FHC is much, much easier to parallel park, due to the rear glass bit. H.P, the 390 you have probably has PAS, and not many of the FHC cars had this. It is not a trivial upgrade, as the chassis may need modification. So if you want PAS look for a car with it already installed.

And keep your hands off that 390 FHC - I'm waiting for the price to come down a bit!

I believe there were only two 2.8 turbo cars made by the factory. One was a FH prototype (owned by Tazturbo) the second was a production drop head in black.

Jim, i might ask you for details of that mod when i get the time to do the work.

PAS yikes my g/f doesn't moan about the lack of that :much: and she's no shot putter

I won't tell you how much i paid for my 390 FHC then

The heater box and demister vents modification took me the best part of a week, and there was no space for dash vents. I have put side dash vents in subsequently, which work fine. An engine swap is less hassle.

Well, my x-misses burst into tears on at least three ocassions trying to wrestle with the steering on my 350iFHC. One time in Amsterdam, there was a tram furiously ringing its bell at us while we were trying to get into a car park. Of course she did smile on the autobahn as she was overtaking Audis and BMWs at 130mph+...

So FHCNICK, is your 390 the primrose yellow factory one, or is the one on the TVRCC website with those 'interesting' wheels the factory 390 ?

No mine is an early car (1985) and to be honest i've never looked into the history of it, i was pretty sure the yellow one was/is the only factory produced 390 FHC.

Mine needs a rebore to 390. It has the A frame rears, with the big fat UJs too, and vented disks up front. The 390 uses the stock 350 crank , but is just bored out to 34.5mm right? Or does it have a high lift cam, pocketed forged pistons, and titanium alloy con-rods and other expensive innards ?

No idea Jim, i dont know when my car acquired its 390 engine, but it isn't a modded 350 so i'm guessing its a stock 390 range rover unit. of course i could be well & truly wrong all i can tell you is that it is definitely quicker than my 350i. car is in storage at the moment awaiting me to get off my arse but i honestly haven't had a spare day this year. when i get around to looking at it i'll post some details on PH and let the experts on here try to work out what engine it is (by the engine number) and when it was likely to have been installed.

i bought the car from a classic car dealer in essex who had bought somebody's collection, which the 390 was part of and he basically just wanted shot of it. Its actually in pretty good condition bar the door window frames are now flexible and there are some wiring/earth faults to deal with. it is grey but the condition of the paintwork suggests its had a respray so could have been a different colour in its younger days and sits on a previous owners personalised plate (PMB *5*B).

I have a 350iFHC; very dramatic looking car from the side, especially since Austec fitted some later 400SE wheels for me. Makes a great sound, but one of the most difficult cars to drive well and particularly difficult at parking speeds. No power steering, although when I bought it, it did have all the air condtioning paraphernalia bolted on the front, but minus the drive belts! Too much unnecessary weight so the aircon got 'heaved'. Agree about the demisting problem, but the thing that annoys me most is the fact thet the wing mirrors constantly move, however much you tighten them. i understand that is par for the course with wedges.

when i bought my 350i FHC it had some after market electric wing mirrors fitted (from a rover 820 i think) and in comparison with my other wedges they are fantastic, solid as a rock and you can even still see out of them at 130mph (on as private road/continent/track only of course). the ones on my 280i fold in at anything above 60mph and the ones on the 390 only last up to about 80mph.
