Well was checking / adjusting a few bits to try and make her run a bit better,

Started of with setting the fuel pressure a tad higher and it idles a lot better, then thought lets see what the co is as everyone says it runs really rich, 7.8 % eek Manage to adust the afm down to 3 % so happy with that, as only a tad over the required level.

Take her for a test spin with a pressure guage attached to check for fuel drop off, and she flies like a rocket, so much power in every gear that I had to find a motorway to tame the beast. Going great and still pulling like a train in 4th at 120 (obviously on a private empty motorway)

Get home let her cool down a bit so I can check a few other bits with my multimeter, starts her up about an hour later and the oil pressure seems ok, but then drastically drops, and the whole engine then sounding like a bag of nails. cry

Put her back in garage and think

So any suggestions of what I broke, hoping its one of two things first

No oil - although no major puddle and had enough in it a couple of weeks ago

Presure releif valve stuck open after a long hard blast or broken spring - would this cause no oil pressure

Then its any other suggestions for my woes, be gentle on me as the engine has probably only done around 20k in its live, 12k in a Chim that got written off and then 8k in last 2 years by me after a 5 years not being used

Paul

I'd change the oil, and if you are really unlucky it [the old oil] will be full of gold coloured glitter which will be very expensive to fix, as the bearings will be down past the cadmium to the bronze. No glitter probably means a relatively cheap fix.

Well there is oil in it, but not had chance to try and staart it or get to the releif valve - damm stupid place to put them, it's a job I hate doing

Thanks for the tip on the oil, if I can find my oil drainer I may well try that next

Well now got oil pump off ,and the piston was quite firmly wedged up the top. Now all apart and soaking in petrol, had a spare piston and gasket lying around and the new piston seems to move freely.

I don't quite get the idea of this as the piston gets pushed up the top by the spring anyway, so why if it is stuck would there be no oil flow ?

Or does the oil pressure then push the piston down a tad and cause flow ?

So if no spring would that be very low pressure, but still flow ?

Why does it get stuck ? Too much of a thrashing and it over heats and seizes ?

Oh well hopefully put it back together tomorrow and it will run nice and queitly with out too much damage, might still change the oil and see what come out

Late reply, and perhaps you fixed it already.
It could be that the relief spring 'disintegrated' and a small particle blocks further movement if oil pressure increases. Was the spring renewed in the last years? If you install new parts (piston + spring), you will probably check the bore as well, as if damaged it is needed to replace the oil pump cover completely.

No oil pressure probably due to the piston being stuck in closed position.

No spring was ok, both replaced about 2 years ago when engine went in.

There is marks on the piston, but as far as I can tell the hole is ok and the new piston sems to slide up and down with no probs

Just need to put it all back together once it's stopped raining and then see what happens.

I think if it does it again I will either buy a new oil pump housing or possible see if a serpintine front end would fit - assuming they don't have this problem

At least I'm off tomorrow and friday so hopefully be back together for a 400 mile jaunt at the weekend, now whers that AA card gone

Well it lives again, doesn't seem any more noise than there was before. tank Good oil pressure again, about 40 - 50 psi on cold bounce

Only problem is leaking like a sieve around the oil pump base, think I need to take it off again and try another gasket but this time use some sort of sealant as well

Anyone know what is best, red blue, gold or whatever else is out there. I was trying to avoid sealant as the rover manual never mentions any, I 've got some silicon sealant in various colours but will try and avoid using that

Glad to hear all appears to be well again Paul - i`m no eggspurt but I think green Hermitite will do the job but it may be a b**ger to shift at a later date (dont take my word for it though - as I thought UNF was an Irish political party!)

Well now done in red, all tight and so far no keeks, just going to test it by hounding the Reading fest drivers

Hopefully won't turn into a very embarassing moment with me sat next to a puddle of oil beer
