brake pad nightmare

Following on from my speaker nightmare, I now have a brake nightmare.

Seems the Mintex 1144s I got at an outragous price of £69 for the front set appear to over hang the brake disks by about 5mm. The original pads were Lucas GDB674, but no number on the so called mintex ones. So now my car is dead many miles from home, and I don;t want to drive a car with anyting that looks like bad brakes. Will someone please email me on a daily basis to tell me the check ALL the parts will fit before I begin disassembly ! arghh! Also anyone know another source for the 1144s?

IIRC the Mintex caliper ref. for the front is MGB633 (Ford M16). Is this what you have pads for?

Dunno, they came from the supplier with no box, just taped inside a bit of card. The brake discs I measured with a caliper, they are from a 1977 to 1985 Ford Granada 2.8 Estate. The discs fit lovely. The pads seems to be missing 10mm of material from the bottom, and 5mm too much at the top. The old ones measured 99x69 mm, and had an arc on the axle edge.

All brake pads should now come SEALED in their original box to avoid contamination. If you accept these someone has lifted your leg.

Jim - you shoulda asked me. I have some mint mintexes in stock. I never got around to fitting them on the grey one. They should only be 50 squids tops, not 150 (hang on, that sounds familiar, has someone pulled the hood over your eyes...;^)

If you need to get home, just get some stock pads for a ford cortina out of any local shop, should cost about 20 squids.

I have no idea what 'standard' means on a TVR! The discs and pads were previously Ford Granada 2.8i Estate IE vented. My car is a 1987, which seems to be the change over year for solid/vented discs.

Can you measure your Mintex pads - I can cross your palm with silver if they are 99x68mm otherwise I'm going to have to get EBC pads, unless I can find a semi metallic supplier...

The reason I asked was because it's possible to fit the 4 pot Princess Calipers with the Granada vented disk but this does leave a slight pad overhang I believe. So it may have explained your problem. If you have standard Granada calipers then I guess it must be the pads.

My pads are the standard Cortina ones for solid discs. About 76mm wide, so no good for you. But if anyone else is interested they are for sale.

There are some standard ford pads on Ebay - it looks like the granny shares pads with the P100 as well.

If you're worried about safety/legality, having pads that overhang the edge of the disc by a few mil is no big deal. What's important is to make sure that the center of effort of the pistons is reasonably close to the centerline of the pad.

Jim, I don't believe either of the pads above are for your car. I would have thought DP2291 (from the same website) is what you require.
I didn't think the pads were the same on the MK2 and MK3 Granada's???

The DP2291 is the pad for the cortina solid disks, as I had on my 280i. However I seem to have a 1980 granada 2.8i caliper and disc on my 1987 350i FHC. Apparently the volvo pads were used by the tasmin racers, so an honest mix-up by the supplier.

Jim, I'm a little confused. From the website the DP2291 is used on the Cortina MK4/5 and the Granada MK2 from around 1976-1985. They list the same pad for vented and non-vented. I believe this is correct as the pad didn't change, just the spacing of the caliper. So I still think you need the DP2291.

The 291 is much narrower - it's the same as the mintex ones I have. I doubt whether the retaining pin holes would even line up, going by Jim's description.

He must have bigger calipers than standard (well, standard on Wedges, anyway...)
