Finally got my rebuilt gearbox back after an 8 week wait and guess what?!! no synchro on 2nd and a godawful vibration in 5th. So after being without the car for most of the summer it will now have to have its gearbox removed AGAIN....I can't imagine what the vibration in 5th is, anyone heard of this before? When the 'box failed on the M40 it was in 5th at the time so I'm wondering if there's a bent bit that's gone back in that shouldn't have???

My first reaction is err the gearbox does have some oil in it I hope... The boxes are shipped empty and need filling and it is easy to forget. That would kill the box in a few miles.
I've used the same company on many occasions with no problems. Just picked up a T5 that they sorted out for me.

Hi Steve yes the box was fitted by TVR Centre in Barnet and filled with oil. I'm interested to note your positive experience - from the very start when I shipped the box to them they have been a mixture of vague, confused & not very helpful about when my box would be done, what was wrong with it, what type it was etc.etc and from an initial estimate of 250-300 pounds they eventually charged me nearly 800 pounds without any hint of an apology for the delays or escalated charges. The excess charges, by the way, were mainly due to the fact that I shipped them a used working unit to check over and tweak, plus the broken box from the car to take the selector mechanism from. Despite numerous calls from me to explain that that was what I wanted them to do (every week)they got confused (every week) and stripped box boxes! They then added that they wouldn't warranty anything other than a full rebuild anyway so all in all I'd wasted a lot of time (and money) all becuase they didn't tell me some things from the start and did things that I had never asked them to do. Obviously they'll be getting it back and if they put it right promptly and efficently and pay for the cost of removing & refitting again (ha!) then I'll maybe amend my view....

What a story - that reminds me why I do this stuff myself - despite the bruised kuckles.
You might wanna double check there is oil in the box now, before it goes back to Barnet. The filler is half way up the side of the box on the driver side. Usually a 1/2" open spanner will do the trick. Dip a CLEAN plastic straw or likewise in to check the level.
