Looks like I may have to change the front brake pads soon so which are the correct ones for my 1985 350i please?
The wedge pages say Ferodo FDB 167 or Unipart GBD 109 ford granada
I have solid discs and I dont need a race day type pad. What do you all recommend?

If you don't drive the car hard, the standard Granada pads should be fine. If you do drive it hard, I would recomend Ferodo DS2500's (if they are availabel in that size)

Helpful advise - measure your pads, and go to the EBC website to find out exactly which car they are from, and then get some bog standard ones from your local parts dealer (Or EBC black stuff if you prefer).

Dont buy the MINTEX ones! Ive got them and they squeal like no tomorrow! Good performance but sound so rubbish...

They cost too much money to throw away though!

I've found the Red Stuff ceramic pads are an excellent balance between cost and performance, but if you don't drive hard, as your original post suggests, then they're probably not worth it and your local autofactors favourite flavour of pad will be more than adequate.

Matt, take the pads out and apply some copper slip / copper grease to the REAR of the pad (NOT THE FRICTION MATERIAL).
The squealing is caused by the metal backing of the pad against the calliper, not the friction material of the pad on the brake disc.

Grease about £3 from Halfrauds and allow up to an hour take pads out and apply the grease.

Thanks for the idea...only thing is that ive tried this before! Ive tried taking any edge off the pad, tried copper greasing the sides, back and every part (exept the face of course!eek) and still they squeal!

My dads got them in the ultima as well and same problem!

Do you have the backing shims in? They have a special angle cut in them to put the piston force to the heel of the pad (if you count the disc rotation as getting to the toe of the pad first, then the heel). The ones I just took off my car didn't have them, and the pads were decidedly uneven. The 1144 I had looked like a metallic dispersion compound, kinda like the stuff they put in the last few mm of regular pads to let you know the brakes are on thier way on by squealing!

The pads turned out to be Ford Escort 1975 - 80 or Cortina 1976 - 82. Ferodo TAR 167 and less than £8 !

I've used mintex 1144's with shims - no problem, no squealing. You could easily make up some shims from some old coke cans.....

Adam, what type of calipers do you have on the front? I'm using the princess calipers and Mintex 1144 pads. I've tried copper grease on the pads, also tried using the plastic backing (supplied with the pads)to stop the squeeling, but neither have worked. I suspect the metal shim may be the answer. Can you buy these for the princess caliper. I would prefer to buy one off the shelf rather than making one. Also can you buy them for the rears??

EBC green at the front. Ok for me, including track days. Had Ferodo and they are fine as well. Mintex at the back at the moment and would consider that for the front if replacement is required, or EBC red (seems to be ok as well). All is fast road types, and have hi-spec 300mm 4pot at the front and standard setup at the back.
Conclusion: if you are happy or not, you can try always something else.....

Ahh well the fronts are cortina calipers so the shims are standard ford. I also have 4-pots on the 400SX but haven't got low enough on the pads to go over to Mintex. Shims are just thin (0.1mm-ish) metal so you could put either stainless or aly in there.

The rears are all Jag but I don't see the point of using non-Jag pads because they don't need upgrading, just do the fronts.

I have Mintex Pads fitted to my Vauxhall Corsa and they squeal aswell, so i went to my local Vauxhall dealer and he told me that all brake pads need a shim, and the problem with Mintex is they are selling brake pads but they are not telling people that you have to buy the shim seperately, most mechanics know this but the average DIY person wont, so then you're left either having to pay extra or make do with noisy brake pads. Type in Mintex shims on ebay the shim accessory kit cost me £16.95 and pads cost me £20.

I was lucky enough to get a full set of Ferodo DS2500's for my car as a birthday present last month.
I look forward to seeing what they're like when I've got the brakes rebuilt.

FWIW, although everyone calls the calipers 'granada' calipers, on the vented disc calipers are unique to the Granada.
The standard non-vented calipers are boggo standard Ford M16 calipers, used on just about every Ford upto the Sierra really!

I bought a brand new pair of M16 calipers from Rally Design, as well as dilled, grooved and vented granada discs, and a spacer kit to convert the standard M16 caliper to vented.
Haven't fitted them yet, so we'll see if it works, but if it does it'll prove to be a very affordable semi-performance setup!

Me, same pads, same problem, same attempted fixes, and still squealing. Oh well?!

That's great to know, although I've never actually had the car on the road yet!
It was a compound which kept coming up, a work collegue who used to do track days in a tuned SEAT said he had great results with them.
I have a set for the rear calipers too, so hopefully I should have some brakes with some BITE biggrin
