ignition advance/retard more bhp

Hi all.My 400se flapper has been running with 4 degrees btdc with vac pipe connected and lacking oomph.Adjusted to factory 8 degrees btdc and had bad pinking even on 99ron fuel,disconnected and plugged vac pipe and all is o.k now,much better performance,coolant at 90 degrees,afm mixture adjusted from 0.85 to 3.50 co.What is the purpose of the vac pipe and I took the lucas dizzy cap off but could not see any "weights".How does the ignition alter its self? cheers simon "who"s learning rapidly about the rv8 but enjoying it along the way!"

I think the clockworkery is deeper down in the guts of the dizzy.
