My 400SE doesn't seem too happy when he's first started up. Engine fires up fine then unless I give him loads of revs he stalls when trying to manoeuvre at low speeds. All is well when travelling through the gears but he's prone to stall again at traffic lights if I don't catch him in time...

He's gone for a service this week so hopefully this will sort the problem. Any ideas though? The mechanic is more used to working on the M Series / Vixens than Wedges....

No help, but the Griff does that when first started, stalls once then runs fine after the re-start.....will have to hear what the masses think.

Is the Griff reluctant to restart after the first stall?

Have you tried cleaning the stepper motor ? (if it has one) My 450's idle can get a bit low, never normally stalls, unless lights are on and have the steering on full lock. Clean the stepper and see if that helps. If not it may need timing or idle adjustments, new spark plugs etc.

Once you start you just can't stop......unless it stalls.....

My 400 has a babbit of doing that...ive raised the idle a little which has helped although not ideal as she sits at about 1100 when ticking over....

Id love to know a real fix!

Why do the lights and steering affect the revs?? I have read somewhere else that if the lights are on the car can stall when starting up initially! I'm seeing Neil again on Saturday so will ask him what fix he has in mind. Will let you know.

lights and power steering pump put extra load on the engine and slow the tick over down, although i think the 400 hot wire compensates for this.

Wish I'd never asked... It's a bloody minefield! The joys of wedge ownership have just begun.
Still can't wait to get the car back though. The biggest idler around here is Stu! His revs are almost non-existent.

Possibly running a bit rich? That'll make it temperamental.

Have a look in here
www.tvrwedgepages.co.uk/
Click on "maintenance" the look up the various subjects. Wedge Epistles 2 has a lot of info. Not me but other people have put a lot of effort in.

Rest is very good as well.

Emma You / Stu just need to be a little patient. Rubin needs to warm up for a few mins b4 you set off, you should give him chance to wake up. The S / motor was new in the spring the bill s/be in the history. the Idle speed is set spot on as per Richard Thorpe. The sparkplugs, leads, dizzycap and rotor arm are all VERY recent. Have you got him drinking optimax or whatever shell call it now ??
As its a Hotwire you cant really set the tickover the ECU S/motor does it for you. he should tickover at about 1000 rpm. the S /motor also compensates for any engine load such as P / steering or headlights - heater on.
Just give the engine chance to warm up untill the thermostate opens 3-4 mins and he should be fine.

If not, bring him back for a full refund hehe

Thanks Darren! No, he's not running on Optimax. Tickover is around 1000rpm.
Sorry, but nothing will persuade us to bring him back! I guess more patience is the answer then.

First step is the stepper motor.. mine does that and I've not got around with installing a new one - at about £100 .. ouch.

They can be cleaned but if there are broken ..

Comment about about running rich is probably not correct - a car needs to be rich when cold as the fuel drops out of the air stream when the car tries to stall - even more so when cold - the added rickness is to maintain the mixture.

You would also need to give the mixture longer to burn but the ECU does not control the timing..

Spooky - do you live near Benfleet/Canvey? I think Neil uses them a lot for tuning so I expect the Wedge will end up there soon.
