Alternator - replacement wiring problem

My sons (mattman) wedge broke down friday... RAC said duff Alternator. got a replacement which looks the same BUT the connections look different.

We took off two thick wires (yellow tags- brown wires) and one smaller wire.(brown with RED tag)

We put the two thick wires together on the right hand bolt connection, and the small wire on the left hand bolt connection. There is a spade connecter as well near the left hand connection? Not used? Anyway....... started it up, doesnt charge!

The old alternator didnt have the empty spade connection, but it did have two others with what look like suppressors attached .......We havent fitted these. Not sure if we have got it wrong? but anything else to check re charging first? Battery is fully charged and holds its charge. When you run the engine it shows 11 volts on the ampmeter. ?????? Help!

yes thanks.... thats the OLD one we have just replaced....... new one is not the same - of course! its for a ROVER etc, all the bolts fit fine...its a bosch refurbed.... but connections are in a different place ....??

I have a Lucas alternator on my 1987 350i

Two thick brown wires going to right hand bolt connector

Thin brown and yellow wire going to left hand bolt connector

Thin brown wire bridging from right hand bolt connector to spade connector just to right of left hand bolt connector

Thin red wire going from capacitor underneath to spade connector above left hand bolt connector

Make sense / any help?
