No, not another Wedge, but a very large and very heavy.........4post lift! Currently beached on my driveway, wondering how to get a 8.5ft lift through a 7.5ft door, hmmmmmmm.......

Anyways, that little problem aside, onto the next!

Who knows about electrics? Anyone know the cheapest bodge (sorry, fix) to get a 3phase lift on single phase sparks? I could just buy a phase converter, but they're pricey, so any cheap suggestions welcomed

cheers
Dave

Oh Boy, you are suddenly going to become so popular.

I think in UK each house only gets one phase (in US it's two)
Cheapest and most practical way I would think would be to buy a elec motor for the pump.
Now if your neighbour is on a different phase......

There are elect motors that are multi voltage, check the one you have for an unused connection. Very common on Swimming pool stuff not so much on industrial. Could get lucky.

new singlephase motor is the cheapest - phase converter is the best option

Simple... sing with me 1-2-3 Right said Fred, this ere wall is goin't 'ave t'go!

Just knock the whole wall in if you need to and re-build it after.
You might be able to get the motor re-wound for single phase. Where did it come from? Have they got any more going cheap?

When you get that lift going you will love it almost as much as the wedge . Luckily had 3 phase in the shed wedge lives in , wonder how anyone manages without lift and its safer than jacks etc.

Funny you should mention him, but I was thinking Wedgie

We are single phase in UK, and there's not a chance of getting 3phase up here! I'm half tempted to go the phase inverter route. Partly to give me the option of buying more large industrial type equipment in future, garage equipment, woodwork machinery, etc......Any good suppliers? I've found a couple at around £400.

I've pondered the motor swap, but this one is supposedly 5hp, and single phase ones of that power are harder to obtain it seems?! I don't think the one it's dual voltage, but I don't really do electrics so could be wrong, I might take a picture of the innards and post it to see what anyone thinks to it.

Time for a Google on rewinding motors, phase inverters, new motors, demolition, A&E numbers........

As for getting it in, I've been plotting(oh dear), simply tilt lift at an angle and gently push through door, easy really, we shall see.

I can't wait to get it up and running, the Wedge will be spoilt

cheers

There are some on eBay, for example:

Ah, now you mention it, I did see that one and then forgot! I was then suspicious as it was very cheap compared to others! Might be worth a go though I think.....

Yeah - what have you got to lose? It's cheap because most of the others appear to be brand new, you'd be better off with a 2nd hand unit, much cheaper. I would imagine the current draw with a wedge on would be half that of a fully loaded Range Rover.

Dave - I may be able to get a brand new inverter cheap from work (we are closing and everything must go). What is the motor rating and can it be wired in delta? Better still a photo of the plate and one of the input terminals would be good. Can't promise anything but if i can get one suitable it would be CHEAP

Ah, now that would be fantastic if you could though sorry you're closing

I'm unsure of it's spec, but will study it tonight and see if I can find any useful figures on it. Other than being told it's 5hp I'm not sure. You've lost me with the delta wiring I'm afraid!

I'll try and get a decent photo of it tonight, it's a bit dark though......

3 phase is used for heavier tools, can't see how you can get more power out of your outlet with this thing, maybe it works but then it takes you an hour to lift the wedge ?
Just call the powercompany and order 3 phase connection, it should be possible

Possible - but expensive. A car crashed into the front of my house once and as part of the works I enquired about moving the electrical feed coming in. The leccy board would sort out a single phase for a few hundred quid, but all 3 phases - that would cost mega ££££. So I left the supply in the same place and retained the 3-phase coming in.

A three phase inverter will just draw more current from the single phase source.

Therein lies the rub. 1hp is 746W.

Allowing 20% loss in the convertor that gives 4.4kW which equates to 20A.

You might have to install a cooker spur direct to your garage to make sure the mains can handle it!

depends if you wire the motor star or delta

Sadly I definitely won't get 3phase for less than many thousands where I am, middle of nowhere and down private lane.

Fortunately, there is a 60amp feed (or thereabouts) to the garage, feeding into a nice new MCB, complete with 30amp (live) cable dangling in the air just above where the lift is going My thanks to the previous owner who had all manner of weird and wonderful blacksmithery machines! The garage electrics are better than the house. I thought for a while there was 3 phase, but turned out to be 16A sockets, told you I knew very little!

Dave:

(a) You jammy git (there, for the folk who knew I'd be green )

(b) find the main fuse feeding the whole property. THAT will be the limiting factor. Just because someone put a chunky wiring install in the forge/foundry/shed doesn't mean there's actually enough overhead on the main fuse to allow you to use it.

I have 100A main fuse but the aircon draws 60A on start-up and 11A running, the compressor blew 13A fuses with monotonous regularity until I put a 16A MCB in for it; the TIG set takes 27A flat-out and the electric heater 13A. Now suppose while I was welding and running an air grinder off the compressor, me Julie, in the midst of brewing-up a cuppa, roasting a chicken and doing the ironing, decides to fire up the aircon yikes

Not sure how I'd do it. An inverter would be the tidiest solution: I could probably buy one through work and lose the VAT but even so it'd still be hundreds. As you say a big-HP single-phase motor would be rare and £££...
