I am converting my 280i to a 350i. Here in the US the 350 was unavailable. I have a 3500 Rover from an 88 Range Rover in great shape so I was wondering what tranny, bellhousing, etc. I would need to complete the change? Appreciate the help boys and I'll hoist a warm brew in your honor!

LT77 box with a Rover SD1 bellhousing is what was used originally.
Should be able to get an LT77 from a Rangie.

I haven't check my Bible but I thought the Rover V-8 wouldn't fit in a 2.8's frame rails??? Misinformation or are you planning a MAJOR redo? As it is, the V-6 just fits if you use a remote oil filter. Grady

Depends on when the 280i was built. Early ones do have a clearance problem. Later ones used the 350i chassis. With all engine transplants... check and double check.

Mine is an 87 US Spec. I believe they are the same. Further question, what will I need other than the engine and trans? What mounts were used? Wiring issues?

We are a little disadvantaged across the pond.

How about brakes

Surely over their you must have a reasonably source of powerful V6's that would be easier to fit / source

SD1 engine mounts. ECU, loom including injector resistor pack, different speedo, instrumentation will need looking at. Manifolds and exhaust will be fun. That will need to be made or a TVR version imported. Worth getting alternatore/PAS pump/air con etc as well as I doubt the Ford ones will fit without a lot of mods.

Thanks Steve. I guess I need to start hunting some of those parts.

Got the brakes covered. I upgraded to a bigger kit from Keri. Over here, TVR parts are available but only for 280i's. Other than that you need to know the Rover Crossover or get very creative.

Doesn't the Rangie LT77 have different ends though - for the transfer box or summat? The ones on eBay always look different.

I would go for a Rover 3500 SDi-sourced box, preferably vitesse, or one for a Morgan, MG etc. The later serial number suffixes are usually better.
They come up on uk eBay fairly often. You'll need to get a very friendly shipping company to get it back to the states, as they weigh 40kg (without bellhousing). Don't forget the transmission oil, clutch slave, clutch release bits, bellhousing and bolts for same, and the flywheel cover. You might need to weld the gear lever to move it back 2 inches.

Is the propshaft the same length?

Good questions Adam, but the biggest drawback in the States is no Rovers only Rangies, so I will need to get the box here and source the ends across the pond. Unless one of you boys was to be visiting.........

Would shipping be any cheaper looking this direction, New Zealand? Usually plenty of older cars still on the road!
Here's a gearbox although no bellhousing on this one but there'll be one out there. Or breaking range rover
And this engine would be nice hehe.
Or keep it Ford with Cosworth stuff
US$1=NZ$1.47 approx.
