Overhaul kit for brake mastercylinder. where to buy?
Discussion
Take a look at TVR CAR PARTS :
www.tvrcarparts.com
Search for wedge brakes..
or give them a call - they are masters at finding the parts we need and at a good price.

I have the same problem on my '86 and everyone keeps pointing (indirectly) to a TR-7 master. - Although mine has a different reservoir design. TVR CAR PARTS' 120 pounds appears to be for an entire (new/recon) master cylinder. If the casting is really the same and could be cross-referenced, there are a number of TR-7 rebuild kits for much less.
As previously posted, when I sent an email inquiry I got not answer.

Many ford parts were used, especially on the tasmin. Could it be a ford master cylinder? If yes, it should not be too difficult to track down a set to refurbish. And would expect like 30 Euro's max.
Another method is to take the master cylinder and the seals detached to a parts supplier, as it is not the only possibility to buy complete sets. The seals (long ago) were sold individually as well. The seals can point them in the right direction, and by comparing you can be sure you get the same stuff.

I certainly don't say TR7 as I have seen 7 different brake masters on these cars. Yes they were TR7 early, then Mk IV Cortina but be careful as there was a lot of variation here and then with Sierra/Granada.
The casting is also not much help as it doesn't fully identify the part only the basic casting before it is machined out so the bore size, fittings (both size and number) can vary.
Sorry Steve, Didn't mean to misstate regarding the TR-7s; I more hoped it was the solution. Let me ask this question...
On my my master cylinder, the brake fluid level sensor (and its 2 wires) are built into the reservoir cap/lid - much like a Jaguar. Do they all do that or would that provide any clue as to the source? Most of the pictures I've seen (particually of TR7 M/Cs) show what looks like a plain and smaller diameter cap.
Thanks Grady

The cap isn't much help as that sort of changed as well. The bolt position that attaches the MC to the servo unit can be offset, in line, big holes/small holes. The fittings can be imperial or metric. I suspect that a lot of the variation was caused by the donor manufacturer changing things but not the part number. Happens quite a bit.
The fittings issue can be got round by making new pipes. The bolt holes are a bit trickier.
The seal kits are generic though. Take out the master cylinder, measure the cylinder bore and order appropriately.

got a prompt reply from TVRparts:
"I am sorry but overhaul kits are no longer available. We have master cylinders in stock at £138.00 plus carriage charges."
today i remembered a german parts-dealer, specialized in british-cars and gave him a ring:
"i´m sorry, a complete cylinder isnt available, but an overhaul kit for 30,-euro (20,-pound), but takes 10days"
so lets wait.......

the company, who gave me the info about the seal-kit didnt reply to my email. will try to fone them 2 moro.
so...we are again back to the beginning:
i "only" need 1 seal for the piston towards the servo. thats the only worn one. (the others have the same dimensnion, too)
i also will try to ask my local suplier for hydraulic-seals 2 moro!!

Yeah, but now I have to worry I'll get some stray one back. Maybe I'll get one in solid brass-bronze for some rare Roller or Pierce Arrow and retire to a horse farm.
On the other hand, I spent a couple of hours replacing the seat leather on my son's first car "to be"... and learned yet another automotive skill - either how to upholster or the value of sub-contracting

the overhaul kit is ordered: 30,-€ and found another company that offers such a kit for only 15,-€, including pistons 34,-€
and now the best thing: the 3 connection mastercylinder is from a ford cortina, definately!!!
costs new 132,-€!!!!!! and not 134,-pound as at TVR parts!!!! Daylight robbery!
watch out here:
www.oldcars.de/kataloge/taunus/Taunus_deutsch.htm
you´ll find the parts on page 59

hi, arent the wishbones listed? click on the blue item-no on the end of the chart, a pop-up window will tell you the price (net and incl. vat).
you can also go back to www.oldcars.de and select a differnt car (e.g. granada) for other parts.

Hey, there's a picture of my master cylinder...
www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.
Does that mean I have a V-8? Nope
Does anyone know if it's at least one of 7 variations for a 2.8?
It's becoming a quest...Grady
