Am I to understand the original problem is lack of boot space because the lid has to go in vertical and cannot sit on the top like a Wedge should we want to?

Well, yes and no. The roof does take up a lot of space, but its also a royal PITA to get in and out of the boot, can get damaged when it is in the boot, and is hideous to fit (although I'm convinced I've just got a lousy fitting roof)
