My 390 had a straight through stainless system on it, which I spy is for sale again...My chim had the box opened up, all the baffles removed, which in effect makes it a straight through job. Lovely sound.
Doesn't pop and bang as much as the wedge but by jingo when I'm giving it some beans it makes a lovely noise.

mine should be going there soon for a new exhaust,(£500 for full system is that about right?) if you are trying to get in touch with him, do it soon as he is going away on the 7th.

My uncle on his 400SE had a back box built for his car, it made it sound like a range rover. He had it removed and it sounded great.
For some reason my old 450 has always sounded loud. I had a new back section mated to the original front stainless section with a straight through pipe and it made it sound outrageously loud to say the least. Ask Badred......
I sould imagine that it might be an issue with the next Mot not to mention pissing off the entire street.

As mike says, the MOT may well be a problem. I am thinking of taking it off and getting a full sports system from ACT, Tim does the full jobby inc headers in SS for about the same price as a quickie divorce.( Mike will not be offended as he also thought it was just too much ) I think it is going to drive me mad next summer (can a car get a ASBO ??)
It does sound good for a short time in the pub car park, but with the roof down that noise following you round all day .......
I dont know what it would sound like on a standard 390 Combine, but I will be taking it off towards the end of January if you want to give it a go. You will have to fit the whole system inc headers as none of it is interchangable, unless you can weld.
I must admit that mine can get on my nerves at times after a long journey, for work, not for fun. Somehow the fun drives have a different effect to putting up with the noise. I had the mild steel zorst replaced with a stainless from a well known supplier. Please, this is not a gripe or name or shame and I am more than happy with it, more of a praise but the stainless is noisier and most certainly has a more vicious growl to it. A better sound I think without upping the dB too much. Whether it is straight through or not, I don't know.

have sent you a text regarding this as i could use the manifolds and front pipe at least.

I have a straight through as the centre silencer has nothing in it.
Extremely loud but agree with jmorgan that it only grates when having to drive it, as opposed to a fun drive.
It does mean you can never be inconspicuous, if that would ever be possible driving a wedge anyway !
The only thing I would like to change is to maybe fit a glass fibre bomb type silencer at the rear to try and get a deeper base sound as otherwise it's a bit on the high side - makes it sound a bit highly stressed even when just pulling away from lights normally - other drivers thinking you've given it some beans because of the noise, not realising that it would have sounded like being overtaken by a jet fighter if I really had given it some !

That was one thing I found with my old Tasmin: the stainless system had been on the car for about 5 years before I bought it, and the wadding must have just about gone. At idle it sounded like a tractor, but through the revs it developed a rising howl that used to make your hair stand on end and sounded like it would never end
In some ways it suited the car better than the V8s pipe when it is similarly revved: there comes a point where it stops sounding nice and just becomes strained.
