Does anybody have a spare throttle pot to sell, lend, give me?

cant get one for less than £80 and seems a bit rich. would be new but still seems alot.

Am half tempted to make a housing for a normal 0-5K pot and see if that works?

ANY IDEAS?

Try fixing the one you've got. By being careful you can cut through the body, re-solder the duff bit of track and glue the body back. Look in the Wedge epistles by GerryAtrick for details.

Original SD1 pots are screwed together, pick out the potting compound around the 3 intentations and unscrew it, the two parts are not bonded together.

For £80 it's got to be worth some effort. I would thing a "normal" pot will be susceptible to dirt/moisture/ingress. Can you get hermetically sealed pots or build it into a gasketed box? Let us know how you get on.

Is it the two screw version? You can cut the back off with a Dremel or similar to gai n access.
If you looked at modifying a normal pot you may have to add a bias spring to it as even a couple of degrees difference every time it returns to idle would alter the, er... idle.

supose it depends howmuch backlash there is in the pot. you can get cheap ones ie £1 max which have no backlash at all and so with a tight tolerenced fit to the butterfly spindal you get away without using a spring on the pot?

Later RV8 throttle pots are not that expensive. Can't we use those? Seems that their way of operating is the same, only the slotting to adjust is different. As long as the slotting can be adapted to reach the magic 325mV, thought is should be fine. I do not need one a the moment, but was considering it as had engine running problems last year (was ECU, now fixed).
Worth a try/investigation?

I seem to recall that certain later Jags (XJ40) used the same pot but on a different throttle body... and they were coloured red instead of black, but the resistance is the same.

Hehe, you wanna try getting the 2-screw one: its 250 odd quid from Rimmers. I laughed so hard I nearly emasculated myself!

Wasnt the throtle pot in the end: dodgy ignition amp: 30 quid!

The rimmer one has a special plate so the two bolt pot. can be bolted onto a three bolt plenum. The three bolter is the early SD1 version. I have a new two bolt version - if anyone is interested.

Don't tell everybody, but the ignition amp from the BL Metro is the same. You can pick up a Metro dissie (with amp) from Ebay or a scrappie for a few quid, you won't get an RV8 one for the same

You can buy the new adpater to covert to the 2 hole version for under £20 from David Manners (well it was when I bought mine about 4 years ago). Alterntively they were commonly fitted to V12 jags and you can get one from a breakers.

You will need to make an extender for the shaft, I used a small piece of round bar, drilled a hole through it and then tapped a couple of grub screw in the side to clamp the shafts.

Am fairly sure its the pot. Although the car is very drivable. it has idle problems but not all the time, the pot reads about 2 volts all the time with no change at first i though that it could be the way i was reading it but tryed a different volt meter and still the same. but it is strange as the car like i say is very good. All i can guess is that it being at 2V it is just about ok for the full range although not ideal? or maybe the ecu averages out the pot and the AFM to work out the injector times? Either way I still need to find a new pot!

2 Volts? You should be getting about 325 Millivolts at idle then gradually rising as the pot opens. Are you sure you are measuring it correctly?

The 350i will drive pretty well fine with the pot disconnected, broken, open-circuit... so the 2V constantly might just be an indicator that it is kefurkled.

I recon them for a tenner if you don't want to do it yourself. I only attempt the old-style big fat ones though...
