Dice with a 944

My brother in law followed me to a classic car meet yesterday in his 944 S2,and despite my best efforts I could not pull awway from him on the straights. I knew 944's were quick, but not that quick! Should a 400 be able to out accelerate a non turbo 944, I would have thought so but maybe not.

Very underated car the 944 but would have thought a healthy 400 had the edge in outright acceleration - sure you had the foot down all the way and used all the revs ?

Got this from one of the Porsche club sites. Seems like even a 350i should be able to beat a 944 S2 on the straights. I's still like a 944 as an everyday car though - underrated.

The S2 is the 3.0 I think, which is a quick car that handles magnificently. I would have thought they would be similarly matched in the straights, and the porsche would have the edge on the bends, but be significantly aurally challenged.

I had a 'tussle' with an S2 when I had the blue 390. I had my foot glued to the floor, and couldn't pull away from him. Surprisingly he backed off on the bends, maybe because he expected me to do a spectacular 'off', which I didn't .

I've only had the 2.5 versions of the 944 which were quite a bit slower than the S2, but what a brilliant car.

Figures on paper don't do cars justice.

depends on the context of the situation i suppose, was it just a quick blip for half a mile? did you change down to get the best out of your "go"? what speed in what gear etc makes a difference but either way the 400 should have been able to pull away from the 944 on a straight bit of road unless you were being mechanically sympathetic and the BiL was ragging the teutonic beast within an inch of its life.

I'd rather be driving the 400se anytime , the sound at 30mph is probably heaps better than a volkswagan at 90 mph , IMHO !

as it happens i have a 1986 350i and a 1985 porsche 944 and i can say 100% that my tvr is faster, handles better and most deffinately sounds better. but the porsche is warmer in winter!!!

hmm...had both, and can categorically say that the 944 handled much much better due to weight distribution. Didn't make as nice a noise, but with inlet and exhaust modifications became a snorty little fellow, but as for standard wedge handling...well....not up to 944 standards. (imo - having tested both to their respective limits)

was not saying that the porsche is a bad car but i prefer my tvr. i have tinkered with my tvr s suspension ( shocks, set up etc..) so thats why it handles better but in the wet is another story!

There are places to take the wedge to get the handling sorted big time , guglielmi Daventry being one , specialist in trackday setups or whatever you want , heard this from northants tvr member .Thinking along these lines myself .

i am lucky cos where i work we have a 4 wheel laser alignment computer. and the last owner had already put adjustable shocks and springs but never set it up. so i did. it took a while but was worth it. oh and of course free! he he

Absolutely, it transforms the handling. Standard handling is a bit ... well..

But tweaked pork suspension is also very good
