Gearbox front seal

We found some sludgy oil in the bell housing when the engine came out at the weekend and think maybe the gearbox oil seal has gone. Can the seal be replaced externally or is this an internal strip down job?

There is also a little oil around the crankshaft seal, this is obviously external so will get changed.

The engine came out as the clutch was slipping though the clutch plate does not look particularly worn hence the idea it might be oil contamination.

Yes, I spotted that too, thanks. I need to check the type number on the box, the car is a '91 so it may be later than a 'D' - at least that is what a few sites reckon. I might just go down to Halfords and see if there is a Haynes for a Rangie to check out the seal fitting.

front seal is replaced by removing the bolts on the plate, can be done without stripping the box, got mine from landrover dealer

Seals on a LT77 gearbox leak if ATF is used (was never designed for that), instead of proper transmission oil. So it could be from the past when ATF was in. But if you can change the seal now even the better, and have the insurance in the future. But don't use ATF as it could leak again. SMX seems best (oh no, started another discussion on what to use in the box...).

We used a synthetic from Valvoline as I could not pick up any SMX at the time - it may have had atf previously though.

It is a Vitesse 28A box and a G suffix - at least it looks like a G but could be a malformed C I suppose.
