Same reg for my wedge?

For the sake of history and posterity should I keep the same reg on my wedge?
For a one time fee of $100 or so I can have a licence plate made for my car
that says anything I want provided it's 7 digits/letters or less. In this case
e370psg fits just fine.

Should I keep it the same or maybe get something like:

MY TVR
FASTTVR
MY390SE
WEDGE
GRRRRRR

In my shoes what would you do? It's a hard decision for me. I like both ideas.

Why are used personlised licence plates fetching 1500 quid or more in the UK?
I'm astounded that people would pay that much rather than just thinking up something
unique and ordering a custom plate and paying some government fee.


On another note, can someone with a measuring tape do me a quick favour please?
If there's any factory made screw holes for mounting your licence plate on the car
can you give me a measurement of how far apart they are? Since I've got time to kill
before my wedge arrives, I'll pass some time making a nice stainless steel licence plate
holder that holds a North American style plate while screwing into the Euro hole spacing.

Unfortunatley we can't make our own plates up here, we have to make do with whats already/is going to be issued. Probably why private plates can become so expensive. I'd get a set made up that are personal to you or your wedge, make it stand out even more (if you need to !!) it'll be a good talking point !! Don't know what the rules are on holding the original plate on 'retention' ?? Don't know whether its a one off fee ot whether you have to pay every year, basically you can keep the registration number off the vehicle but still own it. Check out the DVLA website -

I took a look through DVLA's site. It's a shame you can't just get registered whatever you want for a reg mark. (replacement)
I was surprised to see they auction off reg's too. If they really want lots of money, they should sell them what
the customer wants like here.

I think you're right though about getting something that stands out. I'm going to go with GRRRRRR.
We only use rear plates here so I can leave the front UK reg plate on for authenticity's sake.

There are no such things as "personal plates" in the UK. They are all randomly generated unique registration numbers. The old ones are non age related and are the most prized as they tend to spell out words best. The DVLA have in more recent years "kept back" the more interesting plates with a view to flogging them on the open market to the highest bidder.

Don't want to disappoint you but the original plates are probably self tapered through the plate and into the GRP in a unmeasured way that the dealership lackey might do just before going onto tea-break.

As far as the Braaaaap! goes, you need a ported rotary engine to understand.... Preferably with lightened rotors and an AluminIum flywheel.

Don't mistake me... I'm a hard-core TVR fan, but considering my 1.3L (NA) engine can
power my 2800+ lb car(FC rx-7) 95% as fast as a 2441lb 4.0L wedge, there's a serious
displacement to power ratio there. VERY serious!

In fact, I just rebuilt my 13b rotary using rx-8 internals. (factory balanced, 1.1 lbs lighter, 1000 more RPM) The intake has been ported as has been the exhaust.

All said and done, I'm expecting my 1.3L rx-7 to have a higher top speed than my 4943cc V8!
I'll grant the TVR the torque to accelerate, but once the foot is to the floor, I'd bet my rx-7
goes as fast or faster...... on 1.3L

Braaaaap on weekdays.... a V8 GRRRRRRR on weekends.

That's the way mazda increases displacement. While displacement has changed over the years (ie: 12a to 13b to 20b) the actual "orbit" (for lack of better term) of the rotor has never changed.... EVER... not on a 10a, not in 12a, 13b or 20b. The displacement is achieved by widening the rotor and accompanying housing... or adding more rotors/housings period.

That very concept of keeping the original "orbit" is what has allowed me to build one of the greatest NA (non-rx8) rotaries ever. My current motor has 1988 end/middle housings.... the rotor housings are from an FD (1992 to 2002) my rotors and e-shaft (crank) are from a 2006 model. All in all the clearances remained the same. (spinning bits are 20 years apart, fit like a glove)

According to "top gear" (heh!) my 88 rx-7 had a stock 130 mph (confirmed by me and this video) http://video.google.ca/videoplay?doci
A stock 390SE has a top speed of 145mph...(at redline in a v8? OUCH!)

When I get my wedge in CanaDUH I'm going to make some videos.... not nuff wedge vid's out there.
Once that's done, I'm going to make some 7 vids. I'll be eager to hear the excuses why my 1.3L NON-TURBO (or supercharged) 2800lb car kicks the shit out of a 500 griff while weighing 600 pounds more!

I've got my car back (rx7 FC) and just passed the break in period...138mph in 4th at 7900. (one gear to go)
The engine is rated for 10K rpm but the ECU I guess is only programmed for 8k rpm. Once I hit 8K
the engine dies, and I'm not sure if it's lack of fuel, or lack of spark. It looks like I'll have to
go with a custom ignition and fuel managments system...GRRR! Someone on rx7club.com told me it's
"ignition scatter" whatever that is. I'll upgrade both systems.

On a BETTER note, I've learned my wedge has arrived in Edmonton Alberta (200 miles away) by train, and is
now awaiting truck transport the last leg of it's long journey. I should have it within a week.
I'm so excited I think I just creamed my jeans.

Whoo Hoooooooo! No more than a week until the wedge is in my driveway!

[edit] I'll get a "vanity plate" and keep the E370 PSG reg mark for posterity I've decided.
