i quite fancy putting the older style black no plates on my wedge i know that they are for older cars and should only be used as a show plate.
but i still fancy the change is this something that plod are that bothered about or just told to change them back or coild it be a slap and a fine? or shall i just do it and hope not to get a tug i mean the car blends in with normal traffic doesnt it !!

Sadly not technically correct to use them on a post '72/73 car(forget the exact cut off date but something like 31/1/73) but I noticed that one of the WWM chaps has such plates on his Chim from memory.
If you look through the classic car press, there ae several manufacturers who still press aluminium plates to meet customer requirements.

I was thinking the same the other week - Black and silver acrilic plates on my Black wedge with silver wheels
The last set I purchased for the Triumph Sh*tfire were from a mail order place advertising in practical classics magazine. The quality was very good indeed:

As for the legallity, the plates you mention can only legially be used for true classic vehicles (MANUFACTURED before 31/12/1972). So, if you can find an old (pre 31/12/1972) unregistered classic, you could register it now and although it would be an "07" plate, you could legitimatly use the old style plates as the car was manufactured before 1973.
Personally, I'd go for it. I think the police are more keen in stopping tossers who mis-represent their number plates, mis-spacing them and using funny shapped letters / numbers and that stupid chav-like script front that you can't actually read. On the subject of tossers who mis-represent their number plates, on a previous car, my number plate had 3 1's (111) and I deliberatly fixed a screw through the middle top of the last 2 1's to give the appearance of a 1 and an n (1n). Yes I was pulled, given a producer and made to get the plates remade. I was told that If I continued to mis-represent the number, then the private reg would be taken off me. So I sold the number plate and bought another
