electrical problem ??? ignition on 1.79 volts at coil sometimes i have a reading of 5volts then the car will start and run but not very often,then it will go back to 1.79 volts and will not start. take a 12 volt supply from the fuses straight to the live supply of the coil and it fires and runs .any ideas.is it some earthing problem . regards rocket ron

Ignition switch? Ballast resistor?

So you have not sorted this one yet!

If it starts and runs OK when cranking, but then dies when you release the ignition key to position 2, then it will be a ballast resistor or assosiated wiring fault.

If this fault is all the time (ie even when cranking) it will be an ignition switch or assosiated wiring fault.

What car is it? black wiring or coloured wiring, if it black and the coloured bands have perished and dropped off, your onto pulling wires.....Good luck!

Another thought......... Is there any form of imobiliser fitted?

You can see if its the ballist resister by just joining the wires together and buy passing it .

by passed the ignition switch and tried a second hand ballast resistor
