I just came from my insurance brokers office.
While the underwriter who covers my mazda's will cover my wedge,
I cannot get theft/fire/accident coverage from them.
They will cover the bare minimum, what we call "PD/PL". (property damage/public liability)

So in essence, if I hit somebody, my insurance will cover the other party's car, but not
my own.

I had my broker ask the underwriter why they wont cover it in full like they would
any other car.... in a word, RHD.

That's stupid.

The problem is this is in KanaDUH and no such exemptions exist....unless it's ancient like a Model T Ford.

I can understand the accident comprehensive cover, but fire and theft?

There must be brokers out there who cover RHD cars. Or - find one that just doesn't ask the question.

The alternative would be to convert it to LHD. You'd have to get a dash and steering rack made up, and have the pedals moved over somehow. The brake master might be tricky.

Surely there must be a classic car mag out there with ads in the back for specialist ins firms?

I could certainly advise if he was in the US, but I don't know what differences exist for coverage in Canada. I would suggest making a lot of phone calls, talking with others in the collector car hobby, etc because you would think there was someone out there who will provide suitable coverage.

There's companies that will insure it, but the deductable is huge. In
one instance with a company named Nordic, my broker was told $5k deductable
as I sat there listening to the phone call. A $5k deductable for a $13.2k
car is a bit much. Unless the car is completely written off so I get paid out,
I'd be on the hook for everything. Imagine having your premiums double and not
even being able to get a windscreen replaced? They also insist I put my two
existing cars onto the same policy, thereby driving up their premiums too.

If worst comes to worst, I can drive it with the bare minimum legal coverage
but I'll really be cringing driving it in the city with the morons on the road
we have here.
