TVR 350i ENGINE ID

My log book states that the engine capacity is 3498cc. However, I am not aware that Rover have ever produced an engine of this size. It has been suggested that it could be a typo and should read 3948cc as for a 350 SE. Is there any way to tell the difference between a 1988 3528cc engine and a 1988 3948cc engine? My engine no. is 37A01065.

I think all of the 350i engines are recorded as 3498cc, even though they are 3528cc. I think even the 390SE cars, and probably even the 400SE, SEAC's etc etc will be down as 3498 to get around some of the type approval rules - one set of type approval testing for all Wedges? Perhaps some of the owners have had the registration documents updated over the years - mine is down as a 3498, and I know lots of people with the same.
Nothing to worry about I don't think! Perhaps it was just TVR's way of getting around some road tax issues in certain countries, like perhaps engines over 3500cc were subject to tighther emmisions or higher taxes, so TVR just changed the capacity on the documents? No idea! Just a guess...

Yes your right my 400 says 3500 and I thought it must be a typo but obviously not.
My 390se had 33948cc on the V5 - that had to be a typo!
I don't know if it would work, but in theory, if you mark TDC and BDC of one cylinder, and then removed the spark plug, and fill the cylinder with engine oil (On compression stroke obviously). Then with a suitable spark-plug connector and tube - rotating the engine to TDC should eject exactly 1/8 of the swept volume of the engine. which may be 488cc or 438cc depending. Maybe. I just made that up BTW, never tried it, and I'm sure it would make a huge mess and require some awkward cleaning up afterwards...but you would know for sure the engine capacity (swept volume).
