More problems....
Tried to free the front dampers. Came loose quite easy....too easy!
The lower studs/bolts broke and the nut was stuck solid to the remainder.
Is it fixed studs or is it a bolt from the inside? Hoping it is a bolt.....:-)

Mine is bolt inside.... ('87 350i). One nut went on mine, now it is a loose one on the inside. A bit fiddly but it works ok.

Same thing happened to me.
it Best way I found is to drill all the captive bolts/studs out.
I used the old shockers in place, to act as a drill bit guide as it is easy to go "off line".
You can then fit a new bolts + I added a spring washer and held it whilst tightening using an open ended spanner through the road spring coil. Bit of a fiddle but it works ok.
Use new nylock nuts on the bolts - stops potential loosening.
Idea before you fit the new shockers is to make sure the filings are blown out, check for corrosion and then spray Waxoyl into the area before fitting.
Good luck
