Electrickery?

I have a switch on my car that i can't find a purpose for and am looking for some help.

The first is a small three position rocker switch which is next to the fan switch on the dash.

It will switch between positions one and two and the third position is sprung. I traced the wires back towards the glove box so took off the panel below to find this rats nest



The three wires from the switch ended up going to this un-used muilti connector





Anyone know what this would have been used for?

I gather you are talking about the circular hole and not the rectangular electric mirror selector rocker switch below it?

If so, I ain't got a clue. Perhaps immobiliser? Heated seat?... or nitrous?

I'm pretty sure you are talking about the rocker swithch at the bottom of the picture.

Central position does nothing.

To the left then allows adjustment of the left hand mirror - there should be another switch (sort of a joy stick)... and to the right the right hand mirror.

No, the switch in question was in the round hole next to the fan switch.

That big multipole connector looks aftermarket to me; doesn't look like any factrory connector on a wedge I've ever seen. Maybe audio, alarm, Megasquirt...? Hole in dash could have been for programming switch to select different fuel maps/ turn power amps on/ deselect bits of alarm system...

This is the switch, it's about the same size as the mirror selector switch.

Some of the sleeving around the wires looks new, maybe make them easy to trace than individual wires. See where they go?

Ahhh, I think you may be on to something re the alarm selection Wedg1e, I have only one set of alarm controls but there are two alarm speakers in the engine bay. I've always thought that one must have been an old one that wasn't removed when the current system was fitted. One of the previous owners clearly wasn't too keen on taking out bits that were no longer in use as I have already removed a number of long lengths of speaker cable that were no longer connected at either end!

Now I can see the switch and bearing in mind your description of how it operates (spring-biased one way) I can tell you that it's identical to the one on the Clifford alarm/immobiliser on my car. At the moment I can't get at the file with the Clifford manual in it but when I do I can soon tell you if it was a Clifford or not by the colour-codes.

It does not look like a genuine TVR switch..

I can't see enough colours to be certain and of course even if it was a Clifford it could be a different model to mine, but if those a couple of those reds have green and orange tracers, and you have a white/green, white/orange, grey/green and grey/orange they'd be central locking control wires. That grey that seems to be chopped might well be a grey/ violet which is the optional boot release control wire. The wires from the rocker switch might be black, white and red.

Half the bloody facilities on my car's Clifford had never been wired up, some twodgy bats they must have been - and charged the previous owner £575 for the privilege! Even the boot switch wasn't installed, never mind connected.

Yes, indeed they are. Thanks for the help. I'll have to try to do some more wire following to see what I can safely remove.

Now you have a hole and a switch the challenge becomes - what to do with it?

Fuel maps, nitrous, boot Windows or Linux... ;^)

I may be totally wrong but the long connector looks like a Computer Motherboard ATX power connector !! ummmm

Its the old alarm system rocker switch, when I had new alarm fitted I left it in as I had just had reveneer and didnt want a hole. Austec were going to remove all old wiring on next (this) service for me.

Thanks martin, suppose I should have asked you first! I've booked the car in at Austec for a service between BBWF and TVRCC Rockingham weekends so I'll speak to them then.

Actually I always wanted the ability to switch the driving lamps on independantly like I can do on the 350i. You might use your spare switch for this!

Good idea but I have that switch already, it's the one on the right in this pic.
