Chassis Number

Stripping the chassis of paint over the weekend and came across a welded on little plate, about 1" square, just in front of where the engine would sit. This is stamped, not very well, with the number 767. Any ideas? Could this be the 767 DHC? or 767 350i? There are no other letters or numbers associated with it.
