Cooling fans - what are they from

Did the wedge cooling fans come from another car?

My fan is sounding like it might be on its last legs? Is it something you can get a replacement from a breakers yard, or is it best to buy a new one?

If the car originally had a single fan, as it currently does, is it simple to replace with a dual fan?

My '85 350i has twin fans, which are the origianal equipment fans for US only Spitfires fitted with air con!

You just need to buy a replacement the same size as the original.

Does anyone else get the problem of the bonnet bending the fan cowling and stopping the fan when its open?

Thinks I might get a decent leccy one from NFauto, as Rev says. I have twin 8 inch fans on a Vixen, and they are really good quality and work very well. Shame the original Vixen radiators are so pants really...

Thanks for the link, didn't most of the SEs have dual fans? I think Steve Heath's book implies that all 3.9L+ engines had dual fans.

my wedge had a 12" kenlowe fan on it but i have put twin fans on it off a peugeot 306. fit perfect on the rad but had to move the rad forward 2" to fit in the car. its never got hot since.

My '84 350i has dual fans and I have the original Owners Handbook which states in the specs "Fans - Twin electric". It also says the 280i had a single fan, but it's viscous...

All the wedges I have ever seen have had single 12 inch fans..

So if you have twins then I'd say you are lucky as someone has already converted it..

No my 390 has only a single engine cooling fan.

It's annoying - I scanned the page of the original Owners Manual which states "Fans: Twin Electric". I wonder if twin fans were standard on early Series 1's like mine... I have every receipt back to purchase and there is no mention of a conversion. Any hints on posting pics??

At the risk of boring everyone... Had a good poke around today and the fans on mine are fairly old Smiths Electric jobbies, so it wouldn't have been a recent mod, if they are not original fit.

Just like to find out a bit more about my wedge - it's my first one, having loved them since I was a kid! (My 1984 350i was made when I was 13!). Apart from this fan question, the previous owners seem to have spent a lot of money keeping it standard - the only thing I can see that isn't OE is the K&N filter. It even has the correct Eagle NCT's that are spec'd in the Owners Manual!

mine has twin fans too and was standard fitment
