rear wheel bearings

had my tires balanced..driving home..thump..did I hit something? everything ok..sharp veer on curve...everything ok..doing 60mph..thump thump bang grind..passed by my left rear wheel. bottom line is something is damaged inside wheel hub..get out parts book..looks like page R1...let's see.. parts 17 to 22. (part 20 wiggles badly) Big problem. the facing pages with all the part nbrs has none. Help! (I am in Canada, by the way) I hv been told that it a Jag back end but don't know..Not even sure if R1 is the correct page but it looks like it might be.. I have an 1986 280i federal standards car. Any help would be much appreciated.

The diff and brakes are Jaguar (XJ6) but the hubs and associated struts are TVR specials.



Luckily the bearing was lifted from the pre-'86 Ford Granada (not sure whether Canada got that model though!).

Sounds like the hub nut came undone. Should have been torqued up to 220 ft-lbs and secured with some sort of locking system. Split pin, thread lock or a ny-lock nut.



The differental and inboard discs/calipers are standard XJ Jag the hub is Ford Granada and the driveshaft and suspension is TVR fabricated. If the driveshaft is damaged then you should be able to get a new one made from scratch except for the splined end which can be cut off of the original shaft. The wheel bearing is Granada too but you will need an extra grease seal.

Your gonna' need a bloody big 38mm socket and a 3/4" drive torque wrench to replace it.
I did mine last month its easy once you borrow the correct tools for the job.
