gearbox/diff oil

Can somebody please tell me what oil I sould be using in the gearbox & diff on my 1990 350i. It has a limited slip diff (well both wheels spin the same way when shes jacked up!)I seem to be getting conflicting advice, some saying ep80 & others saying auto transmission fluid.any suggestions!

Castrol technical helpdesk say SMX synthetic for the gearbox. Gear change when cold was easier on mine after putting it in and it also appeared not to leak so much. Give them a call about the diff.

For the diff it needs to be a limited slip special oil, not the standard. Castrol does that as well.
It is a diff as used on jaguars in the '80s, so that could perhaps help to find the right grade. I just go to a jag dealer and get a couple of litres of the stuff, as cannot find a standard shop that sells the castrol ls oil over here.

It is inportant to get the correct oil using stright oil will cause damage to the LS system. I got mine in a local motor factors just ask for it.

Do NOT use auto trans fluid in the gearbox. It was a bodge by Rover to improve cold shifts but it actually wrecks the box. Use Castrol SMX as has been suggested earlier

I agree - Castrol SMX-S in the box works well, and their LSD oil in the diff - I'm pretty sure I used Hypoy LS. Castrol Classic oils do both of these.
